Premature Judgment

First impressions can deceive us. There is no way to truly know one’s situation from a first look. However, human nature makes people construct assumptions off of impulse, whether true or not. This is exemplified in the story “Miss Awful,” by Arthur Cavenaugh, where the characters show the tendencies and effects of judging people without sufficient knowledge.

The protagonist of the story, Roger, is in for a surprise when his third grade class’s lenient teacher is temporarily replaced with the strict and more responsible teacher, Miss Orville, whom the children refer to as ‘Miss Awful.’ Throughout the week, she disciplines the rowdy and talkative class. The students initially think Miss Orville acts the way she does without any reason, and devise a plan to try and get rid of her. They tear up her plants, hoping to get revenge. What the students, save for Roger, do not know is that Orville was actually evicted from her apartment and her plants were the only things she could keep – and now even they are gone, ruined by unnecessary violence.

After the class rebelliously rejoices when finished with committing the deed, yelling informal slang like “ain’t,” Miss Orville berates them, telling them that the privilege of education is invaluable, that wasting it only cripples society as a whole. She reveals, or rather, clarifies her true motive for being harsh to the children who seemed to care so little.

In these two ways, the students in “Miss Awful” show that prejudice causes pain that could have been avoided, and shows that not looking into the full storyof someone ignores their most important lessons.

The awful teacher

The teacher Miss Orville is an awful teacher and all the children hate her. So the children are stuck with a horrible teacher and that the teacher thinks that her teaching is awesome but in truth it is a side on one side the teacher thinks that she is preparing them for life, but on the other side the children and parents feel sad and angry.

The truth is that I think that the children are right because that kind of teacher should be in highschool not teaching 3 graders. The teacher is really mean but in the end of the day the main person thinks that he finds out why the teacher is treating him so bad because in real life you don’t have toys and that you can’t look bad and that you have to do everything correctly and do it fast so the teacher took the toys and made them polish shoes and that she tore the bad handwriting and the wrong ones.

Comparison between Ms. Wilson and Ms. Orville

Every person has his or her type of personality or styles of doing things, and you may like them or dislike them. In the short story “Miss Awful”, there are two teachers called Ms. Wilson, and Ms. Orville. These two teachers are the opposite to one another, and in my opinion both of these teachers aren’t perfect.

First of all, Ms. Wilson is a nice and friendly teacher that loves students and lets them play and talk. Not only she let’s the students play around she is carefree too. For example, Roger, a student, that is in Ms. Wilson’s class one day he was being normal and just like any other day. Tommy Miller, another kid that is his classmate, got tired of sitting in his regular seat. So he asked Ms. Wilson if he can lay down on the floor instead of sitting properly. Surprisingly, Ms. Wilson said yes, and what’s more interesting is that she and the whole class layed down. Can you imagine a teacher laying on the ground?! On the other hand, Ms. Orville is exactly opposite. She is kind of military and very strict, she ordered the students to not play and not talk the whole day. I’m not saying Ms. Orville is a bad teacher because she actually teaches something unlike Ms. Wilson.

In conclusion, Ms. Wilson is a very nice teacher and carefree about anything. On the opposite, Ms. Orville is a strict teacher that doesn’t allow students to do anything. But however, every person has his or her own way of doing things.

Strict Teachers VS. Nice Teachers

Teachers are very influential to a student’s growth and life. An inexperienced or unhelpful instructor can really affect the students’ futures. Since teachers are so important to the next generation, people have wondered what type of teacher is the best for students; strict or nice. A “strict teacher” is someone who is tough on their students, while a “nice teacher” is someone who’s very lenient on their students.

Usually, many children would prefer the nice teacher over the strict teacher, due to how fun they are. Having a fun teacher is beneficial in many ways, but it also has a lot of drawbacks. One disadvantage is that the students learn very little with a nice teacher. Since a nice teacher is very lenient, they usually are pushed around by their students, and are not able teach much to them. Strict teachers are the key to academic success, since they give strong motivation to their students to be more active and learn more in class. The strict teacher makes sure that the scholars are learning properly in the classroom. This is necessary for a child’s future so that they could get a good education and a profitable job.

Some people may argue that nice teachers are more understanding and kind. The fact about how they are more understanding is true, however, this can get out of hand at times. Some teachers could be too nice and understanding that students don’t take their classes seriously. Not knowing how to be strict can allow students to get fairly chaotic in the classroom sometimes, thus slowing down the rate scholars learn at. This is extremely unbeneficial for students that are academically behind, as they won’t be able to learn or understand much from class.

However, the perfect teacher is different for each individual student. Some students need to have a nice and understanding teacher, while others might need a stricter teacher to make sure they take learning seriously. The greatest teacher is usually not just nice or strict, but someone who is understanding and fun, but can be strict when needed. Nevertheless, having a stricter teacher is still more effective for a student than a nicer teacher.

The amazing material, graphene, may take over the world someday. Graphene is a man made substance with many helpful uses. This material is not only hard as steel, but yet also elastic and rubbery. Scientists have already begun researching ways to create and use graphene day by day. Researchers are trying to take advantage of how sturdy and conductive graphene is, and they are beginning to seek new ways on improving the daily lives of people. As many experts begin to discover new ways to create this strong and reliable material, other researchers explore new and innovative ways to incorporate graphene into items.

Graphene was first discovered in 2004, by two researchers named Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov, both working at the University of Manchester. The two researchers found out that they could create graphite by simply touching tape onto a piece of graphite, peeling it off, folding, and repeat. It was not a very difficult process. They not only created graphene, but were able to prove its strength and flexibility. Years later, researchers are working on ways to best use graphene’s impressive properties. This discovery caused much excitement in people around the world, and left many wondering about all the possibilities and ways they could use graphene.

Using tape is not the only way graphene can be made. There is a very efficient method called Chemical Vapor Deposition. CVD includes growing graphene on a metal surface. Then, experts combine it with high-temperature gases and metals, and finally it can be used and deposited on the substance that needs enhancing. Another method experts discovered involves flash graphene. This is as simple as turning trash into something much more useful. Experts can use literally any thing that is high in carbon, and turn it into graphene. This method requires very high heat, almost 5000 degrees, and only takes around ten seconds. This method seems amazing, but it takes an extreme amount of heat to produce a normal amount of graphene. Flash graphene is much easier to create graphene and takes less time than CVD. Both methods are a quick way to create graphene, but it takes lots of thought and money to produce the a small amount. That is the reason why graphene and graphene incorporated items are rarely seem. Until further research, experts are stuck with using quick, yet dangerous and expensive methods to create graphene.

Even though it is very tough and costly to produce large amounts of graphene at once, using the small amounts available, researchers have already found ways to incorporate graphene in many items.  Many researchers are trying to involve graphene with health. They believe that graphene’s thick, durable composition could be ideal for improving people’s health. Some may even be able to wear graphene as contact lenses. Apart from using graphene for health purposes, scientists have found other ways to benefit from graphene. An Italian company, Italcementi, suggest that people should incorporate graphene into cement. As a result of graphene’s ability to conduct electricity and heat, graphene has become one of the most conductive substance researchers have even come across. Using graphene in cement, can not only bring heat throughout homes, but also cause heat to disappear, which would lessen the need for air conditioning in many homes. Researchers have already found out many ways in which graphene could be useful, and will only continue discovering new and advanced ways to include graphene in items.

Graphene; the futuristic substance

Have you heard of Graphene? It was discovered in 2004, and has been hailed as the most important breakthroughs since the plastics revolution that was more than a century ago. It is a material that is made of one layer of carbon atoms, yet it is very strong. 200 times thinner than a human hair, yet 200 times stronger than steel. When it was first discovered, people thought it would make technologies straight out of a sci-fi movie. But here we are, a decade and a half later, still without those technologies. You might think that the process of discovering Graphene was really complicated, but it really isn’t. In fact, it’s so simple, that you can do it in your home. It was discovered by scientists by repeatedly sticking a piece of tape onto a piece of graphite and taking it off until they got exactly one layer of carbon. Graphene is very useful, from strengthening concrete, buildings, and even bicycle helmets, to making batteries faster charging. It is extremely useful, and be used for many purposes. It is very conductive, and so far, the only problem is that it is hard and expensive to produce. The current methods of producing graphene are very expensive, and can only produce very little amounts of Graphene at a time. Graphene can be used for many things, but the current problem is that it can not yet be mass produced. If we were to build big things with Graphene right now using (our) primitive methods, it would take a LOT of sticky tape.

What good is a teacher if the teacher can not teach

What good is a student if a student does not learn

The teacher and a student, a bad educator and a bad education

But how will we change this educator and education?

Enter Miss. Awful, a grumpy old waffle

She gives too much homework and expects even more work

A witch, a villain, planning and stirring “chaos” and hatred for her dear students

The students start to realize, this teacher is for real,

She won’t let them lay down or let them play around

The students start to work, work really hard they did

They started learning how to spell and soon were pretty swell

And after Miss. Awful was about to leave, the students made her proud

Now look at that class, a swell education it is

It shows a example how spoil, will lead to turmoil

but with discipline and work, we could change a couple brats

To learn how to learn and let them get off well!

Now look at that class, what have they accomplished?

From laying down to working hard, they learned quite a lot

Now this is a good educator, and a better education.

Miss Awful Summary

I’m going to be writing about Miss Awful. So, Roger, the student, didn’t want to do his homework and wanted to go to the park, because he was going to have a substitute and he thought the substitutes didn’t care about his homework, so he went to the park and played. His original teacher was Miss Wilson, but she wouldn’t be here that next Monday. Miss Orville, or as the students called her, Miss Awful, would be there. So, as the students went into class, expecting a care-free week, Miss Awful comes out and tells them to form into straight lines and basically sounds like a drill sergeant from the boot camps. She orders people around to do everything. She seemed like a mean teacher. She said that she had taught students for forty-six years. And, she cares about the homework assignment that Roger didn’t think he would. As she comes around to his desk, he drops his book bag, and inside is a spool of string, baseball cards, and a water gun. Then she scolds him about bringing in toys to school. Her mother seemed worried that his son had changed from a playful boy, to a nervous person. Then, after that, Miss Awful ashamed the students in front of their parents. Then he tells Roger’s mother that he sucks at spelling and demonstrates by telling him to spell flower and castle. And he spelled them like flor and kazl. Then at the end of the week, all the children leave instantly the bell rings, except Roger. Miss Awful gives him the toys she had confiscated from him earlier in the week, and Roger practiced spelling flower and castle and spelled them correctly to her.

The Truth About Graphene

Although graphene has been discovered for several decades, there are not many products that include graphene in them. Graphene is like graphite, which is used for writing, but it is only one atom thick, making it 2D. The reason it is not produced a lot is that people have not been able to implement ways to use it in many products that are drastically better than the original. For example, when the first products that had graphene in them did technically include this element, but it did not change much about the merchandise. Nevertheless, I believe that we should still put more effort into using graphene in goods since it has a lot of potentials. 

As technology becomes stronger, scientists will find more ways to create this element for use in the future. However, as of right now, experiments have been tested on graphene to see how it can be made in bigger bulks. One way that was discovered is by burning plastic to about 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Although this may seem extremely difficult, I think people will be able to find ways to do it as technology is becoming better by the second. In addition, it is also getting rid of plastic. 

If people are going to spend their effort creating a machine that can go to that temperature, there needs to be a reason they are doing that. To start, there have been tests that have proven that graphene is almost ten times stronger than steel when it comes to 3D printing. Since 3D printing can be used for many things, having something this much stronger will definitely come in handy. It has also been shown that graphene can be used for touch-screens. If graphene is used for this in the future, plastic can be used with it, avoiding many phone cracks. Even though this tiny element may seem like nothing, it can be used in many different ways to make our world better. 

Should we spend so much money on graphene?

A few years ago, there was this hype about a new material called graphene. Graphene is basically graphite, but 2D and in a honeycomb shape. People had a bunch of crazy ideas about what we could make with it. People believed that we could almost immediately be able to create machines from sci-fi movies. But so far, we have made barely any progress. Some people are still overhyping graphene, while others think it is a massive disappointment. We have already create a few things with graphene and are getting ideas for more. Because these new ideas sound so promising, I think we should keep looking into graphene.

With graphene, we might be able to make something that can filter salt water. This could help many people who live in places with no fresh water close by. Because it might help so many people, it is worth looking into. Also, graphene can be made from waste materials like plastic and rubber. Plastic does not break down and rubber leaches hazardous chemicals into the environment when it breaks down, so this would be a great way to get rid of these harmful things into make something useful. These would be very useful inventions, so I believe that we should keep looking into graphene, even if it is a little pricey.
