Mental Strength

Mental strength is a very helpful item for many people in the future. Mental strength can help your mental muscle grow or shrink. The mental strength within you can grow or be lost.

Feeling pity will take strength away from one. If a person loses someone or something that one very much cares about, that will force one to lose the person’s mental strength if one does not use your power to keep moving forward. If a person feels jealousy towards another, that is another way to lose it.

Feeling confident about oneself and filled with happiness can grow the mental muscle. Ones mental strength will keep growing if they replace the blue thoughts in their minds with true and joyful thoughts. To move past the pity you feel, you should be confident and help one another to feel good about themselves.

People’s mental strength and muscle can physically help physical strength and muscle because one must use the mental strength to find the confidential power to exercise and do many more than feel pity and jealousy.

The bottom line for this article is that mental strength powers one’s whole body to move forward and do more. Helping others can improve a person’s mental strength and feeling pity and jealousy will only worsen one’s mental muscle.

How Much Sleep do we Really Need?

How much sleep do we really need? Everyone knows that sleeping is very important. Sleeping is important for our health, well being, and how we perform. A recent study with more than 1600 people in it proved that being sleep deprived leads to poorer attention and thinking. Sleeping also affects our mood. Recent studies showed that insufficient sleep can even affect the microorganisms in your gut.

We all know that sleeping is important, but how much sleep is enough? If you search it on Google, the most common answer is eight hours. 8 hours seems pretty straightforward, but how did they get this number? We’re told that we should drink eight glasses of water per day, but is that the same to everyone? How much water we need to drink depends on our body’s conditions and what we do.

We can think about sleep the same way. How much sleep we need depends on our body’s current needs. To come up with a guide saying how much sleep you need to get, sleep experts used scientific data to determine the appropriate amounts of sleep for each age group. In the end, they said things, “For teens, we recommend 8 to 10 hours, but anywhere from 7 to 11 hours may be appropriate.” They didn’t say that everyone needed 8 hours. They specified the age group they were talking about. For babies, the range is from 11 to 18 hours. For people over 65 years old, it’s from five to nine hours. This shows that different people need different amounts of sleep.

The chess game

The main person in the story is person named Wavely and she is in a poor family and one new year’s eve she gets a used chess set and then her brothers played with it and made it look good so she wanted to and then when one of her brothers hands her the rule book her mom says it is wrong because its not the chines way.

So she offers the brothers light savers and she gets good and she beats them again. One day in the park she finds this chines man sitting in the park and he teaches her how to play. In the end she wins all the players and her mom brags about how her daughter is very good at chess so she runs away and doesn’t come back until night time so she skipped dinner and she goes to her room she thinks of her mom as a chess player.

The moral of this story is that never let something stop you. Because in many different cases people who go down and come back always get good stuff.

rules of the game

This story is about how a girl called Waverly grew up in San Francisco, Chinatown and how she suddenly became a chess prodigy.

One day, during a Christmas gift opening, Waverly’s family received a chess set and when Waverly started to play, she began to be really interested in chess. She started to practice and learn about the strategies and rules of chess, and soon she was able to beat her brothers. One day, when she challenged a guy from the park to a match of chess and the guy easily wins. However the guy offered to teach Waverly chess strategies and before you know it, she became really really good at chess. She became so good at chess that she didn’t really have to do chores, but to practice chess and also even attend tournaments for chess. She ended up becoming a national chess champion and her mother was really proud of her. However her luck changed when her mother started to brag how she was the mom of this amazing national chess champion. Waverly began to get mad and soon storms off. When she returns home, her mother was really mad at her and soon when in her bead she drifts off to sleep. Dreaming a chessboard, and how her mother’s pieces sweeps her pieces off the chessboard.

This story taught me that you shouldn’t boast about somebody else’s work like Waverly’s mother. She took credit for her daughters work and its basically like stealing Waverly’s chess skills and accomplishments, putting all the praise on HER daughter, but not Waverly alone.

A bad habit I am trying to change

I am trying to change the way I read. I keep on reading while laying down and that damages my eyesight. I already wear contact lens and my eyesight is still getting worse and worse.

I am trying to change that by reminding myself over and over again to not lay down while reading a book and when I catch myself doing that, I tell my mom not to allow me to play video games for the entire rest of my day. That is the habit I am trying to change the most.

“Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan

I personally love this short story and it has been one of my favourites in this past week’s reading.

It talks about how Waverly, the main character in this story plays chess games and also plays against her mother in a game that lasts a liftime.

I like this short story for many reasons, the first one is like how this story doesn’t involve killing, unlike a lot of other stories Dr. Chen makes us read.

Second of all, I could really relate to Waverly and how her relationship with her mother is sometimes very intense and how one wrong movement can ruin the entire thing.

Lastly, this book talks about chess and I love chess. Even though I only play it at home, I’m never really tired of it, and I think that it would be one of my most favourite games.

A good man is hard to find

“A good man is hard to find” is a pretty interesting short story. It follows a grandmother and her family are traveling to Florida. Unlike the rest of her family, however, the Grandmother would rather go to Tennessee. She shows a newspaper article to her son Bailey, whose house she lives in. The article tells of an escaped convict known as the Misfit, who has escaped federal prison and is believed to be headed toward Florida. The Grandmother says that she would never take her children near such a dangerous criminal. They ignore her, and start driving. The family argues constantly: nobody listens to the Grandmother, her grandchildren mock her, and encounter multiple things. The family stops at The Tower, a filling station and dance hall, for barbecued sandwiches. The owner of the store is Red Sammy Butts. They talk about how there aren’t many good men left. After they leave, the drive into a ditch and someone comes by to help. The Grandma recognizes the guy as the Misfit. Because of that, he says that was a mistake to know who he was. In the end, he and his henchmen kill everyone, even though the grandma was trying to say he was a good man. This story was interesting, although there wasn’t really a theme.

A Good Man is Hard to Find

In the short story A Good Man is Hard to Find, a family goes on a road trip, but crash their car and ended up killed by a criminal known as the Misfit. One of the themes in the story is the conflict between societal morality and personal morality.

The story begins with a family consisting of Bailey, his wife, their children John Wesley and June Star, and their grandmother. The grandmother is against the road trip but goes with them, secretly bringing her cat for fear of it killing itself while left alone. Things start out normal, until the grandmother remembers an old plantation nearby that she visited when she was younger, so she lies and says that there was a secret panel in the building, causing the children to throw a fit to go to the old plantation. The grandmother then remembers that the plantation is actually in another state, accidentally kicking her cat and causing Bailey to crash his car. The family recovers from the crash, and they are found by the Misfit. The Misfit systematically kills the entire family, starting with Bailey and his son, finishing with the grandmother. Meanwhile, the grandmother tries to convince the Misfit not to kill her. She tries to appeal to his morals, only to find that he lives by no one but himself. Finally, she reaches out and calls him her own child, and he shoots her three times in the chest, killing her.

In the story, the grandmother has a strict adherence to societal morals. She kept a firm hold on her old morals from when she was young. this is demonstrated when she chastised her grandchildren for not showing respect to their home state and other people. This is also demonstrated when she tried to convince the Misfit to not kill her. She said, “I know you wouldn’t shoot a lady! I know you come from nice! Pray! Jesus, you ought not to shoot a lady.” Here, she believes that people aren’t supposed to shoot ladies, because societal morals say so.

The Misfit, on the other hand, doesn’t care what society thinks of what he does. He only lives by his own morals, and his morals are to do as he sees fit. He says, “I found out the crime don’t matter. You can do one thing or you can do another, kill a man or take a tire off his car, because sooner or later you’re going to forget what it was you done and just be punished for it.” Basically, he believes that it doesn’t matter what you do, and in the end, your consequences are highly random. Sometimes, “good” people end up punished for things they’ve never done, and “bad” people get off scott free.

In conclusion, the short story involves the conflicting ideals of the grandmother and the Misfit. The grandmother believes in a grand overarching set of morals that everyone should follow, while the Misfit only obeys his own set of very different morals.

Marco Polo

Marco Polo is known as one of the greatest explorers to ever live. His impact on all of our lives is immense, such as the popular “Marco Polo” children’s game. Through the changes he impacted on the Eastern and Western world, two of the most notable are spreading cultures and sparking the Age of Exploration.

Since he traveled along the Silk Road, Marco Polo was able to not only bring elements of Western culture to the East, but Eastern culture back to the West. He brought back various Chinese innovations to Europe including paper money, coal, eyeglasses, and a postal service. Polo also used Eastern concepts and ideas to improve the Western map-making and cartography. Without introducing these inventions to the Western world, our world today may be less advanced and complex. From the West, he brought many concepts such as Christianity and many priests. Polo’s had a huge effect on spreading vital ideas and inventions throughout the world in the 1200s.

Furthermore, Marco Polo sparked the start of the Age of Exploration, which included people such as Christopher Columbus and Magellen. These people were curious in the adventures Polo went on to keep exploring the areas he found riches in. Columbus went as far as carrying Marco Polo’s book “The Travels of Marco Polo” with him at all times and attempting to explore the Eastern world described in his book.

Without Marco Polo’s journey to the East, the whole world, namely Europe, the Mongol Empire, and China would have undergone much different paths in history than they did in reality. The trade of culture, goods, and ideas between the East and West allowed the whole world to take a large step in becoming a more modern society. Marco Polo’s trek marked the start of an age of exploration and curiosity that allowed for large steps in advancement for the world.

Marco Polo

Almost everyone has heard of Marco Polo. Mostly, we think of the pool game. But what about the real person? Marco Polo lived a fascinating life. He was born in Italy, but ended up traveling all over with his father and uncle. Along the way, he learned some very interesting things, and ended up publishing a book about his adventures: “The Travels of Marco Polo”. Let’s dive deeper into the life of this famous figure.

Marco was born in Venice, Italy, on January 8-9th, 1254. He first met his father and uncle, Niccolo and Maffeo, when he was 15. They were merchants, and they taught Marco the mercantile trade.

The three men started on their journey in 1271, and explored lots of different places on the silk road, until they reached China. They had to travel on foot because their ship was in a state of disrepair. There they met with Kublai Khan, who was the current ruler of the Mongolian empire, and grandson of legendary conqueror Genghis Khan. Niccolo and Maffeo had met him on their previous trip, and they were treated as honored guests.

In China, Marco was shocked by everything from the giant palace, to the technology. He looked up to Kublai Khan because not only was Khan very skilled in battle, but also because he was a good ruler. When Khan conquered different places, he allowed the government to continue to operate on the terms that they bow down to the Mongolian empire. This allowed them to keep their customs and religions. He also welcomed all different cultures and beliefs, as he was a big believer in diversity.

Khan was impressed with Marco’s many abilities, including being able to speak 5 languages. Marco traveled all over China doing missions for Khan, and lived there for 17 years.

After a while, Polo, his father, and his uncle, began to want to go home. They were worried about when Khan would die. Kublai had always been very hospitable towards them, but they thought that their rights might change from the peoples’ when someone else took over. Although he initially refused several times, Khan finally let them leave in 1291, with one last mission: to accompany the beautiful Mongolian princess Kokochin to Persia so she could be married to her husband there.

After taking a boat to drop off Kokochin in Persia, The Polos returned home in 1295. They brought with them many, many riches and treasures. The Poloos had been gone for 24 years, and had traveled almost 15,000 miles.

When Marco arrived, Venice was currently at war. Polo joined the fight, but was captured around 1296. He spent several months in prison, where he told a fellow inmate, Rusticello da Pisa, all about his fantastical adventures. Together, they published his book, which became an instant bestseller. Released from captivity in 1299, Marco went home. In 1300, he married a woman named Donata Badoer, and they had three daughters.

“The Travels of Marco Polo” drew a lot of mixed reviews. Most people thought he was lying, as they couldn’t believe in all his crazy stories. Also, they disliked the way he depicted the Mongolian empire as good and with more advanced technology than the European empire. Basically, they didn’t want the Mongolian Empire to sound better.

Marco Polo’s book has been reprinted many times, but unfortunately the Europeans slid over some of the good things, and focused on some stories that made the Asians not sound good.

In the end, most of Marco Polo’s stories have been deemed true. Marco Polo was actually pretty amazing because he didn’t lie, and told his stories in a completely unbiased way. He didn’t say anything bad, and instead just described what he saw and the stories that he heard. Polo inspired lots of people to explore too. Although nobody really knows about his personal life, as he only talked about his stories and not about him, he is still a well revered person.

I think Marco Polo was a really interesting person, and that his adventures sounded amazing. I hope one day that I can lead a life as amazing as his.

In conclusion, Marco Polo is a very famous explorer who lived such an amazing life, and he is still so well known today.
