Ransom of the Red Chief

This story is about 2 people, called Bill and Sam, who wants to ransom a kid from this wealthy family to fund for their real estate scandal. This story starts out with Bill and Sam driving up to the kid and asking him if he wants candy to bait the kid into their car. The kid was a rascal, so he threw a brick at Bill’s eye, which really enraged him. They ended up using force to get him in the car and drives to the nearby mountains. From there they start to plan what to do with the kid, but Bill has to make sure the kid doesn’t run and so he plays with him. The played a lot of games, most of which were a big burden for Bill and was really painful. Especially when the kid “rode” on him and hit him. After about 2 or so days, they write the letter to the kid’s dad, stating that his child was with them and if he doesn’t pay up then he will never see his child again. Obviously the dad responded but his response was really surprising. It stated an offer that the two will pay HIM so they get the kid off their hands. Now this was really dumb, but since Bill was so desperate, Sam agreed to the offer and returned the kid to his dad.

I thought this story was quite funny and ironic since Sam and Bill ended up with less money than they started out with and because the dad knew how annoying his son was. A moral from this story was don’t handle things that your not prepared for since Sam and Bill had no idea that the kid was so annoying.

Detecting deaths from COVID

Passing observers can be set apart by a specialist who was liable for a patient who kicked the bucket in a clinical center, which speaks to various COVID-19 passings. They can likewise be set apart by clinical specialists, who are free specialists who work for the solitary city/urban networks. In a certain scope of thought, including city networks. In those local people, clinical specialists examine medical clinic records even of patients who give in crisis facilities to ensure that the symptoms and any testing demonstrate that the patient did to be certain kick the bucket of COVID-19. Without questions, even at Mount Sinai, an irregular remote framework that offers each family an opportunity to have their esteemed one organ futile, the pace of separation was strikingly about 20% before the pandemic. As shown by name, there is a steady deficiency of real researchers/specialists working in the United States, with around 500 at present utilized and fundamental for 1,200. After death assessments, COVID-19 can also be hazardous because of the overwhelming idea of the malady and consistent absences of individual defensive hardware for researchers/specialists.

How COVID-19 deaths are counted

COVID-19 is a major problem that everyone in the world has to deal with. The coronavirus causes many problems to those who have it, such as difficulty breathing or being confused. It can even cause death. But dying from COVID-19 isn’t the same as dying with COVID-19. This sometimes causes false reports of the number of coronavirus cases in a region.

Everytime someone dies from COVID-19 in a hospital, the doctor who took care of them signs a death certificate. If a person dies from COVID-19 outside of a hospital, then the case would be given to an examiner. There is sometimes some confusion around what the real cause of death is for a patient with coronavirus, but if they didn’t have coronavirus, they probably wouldn’t have died.

Some people who die from COVID-19 have other ailments such as coronary artery disease or kidney disease. Because of this, in some rare cases it is hard to determine whether someone died from COVID-19 or just had COVID-19 when they died. But it usually isn’t difficult to confirm what killed them. Most deaths from COVID-19 are due to the reason that the virus causes lung problems in patients.

Coronavirus case counts aren’t always accurate. In fact, they rarely are. In the US, different states have different methods of confirming cases, which means the collected data isn’t always reliable. But even though the different states’ data might not be completely accurate, it is still important. Even just a rough estimate is good enough. This is important so the government can make decisions based of the evidence.

Why the Kidnapping was Bound to Fail

“The Ransom of the Red Chief” is a short story about how two men that attempted a kidnapping and ended up losing money because of how they carried out they kidnapping. The story may have been a lesson about how people need to plan ahead, but from almost the very beginning of the text, is was quite obvious that the kidnapping was not going to turn out well.

First was when the narrator said that “it seemed like a good thing: but wait till I tell you.” This sentence is spoken by the narrator as he is reflecting on the experience, and from that first sentence, it is already implied that it did not go well. Another good hint about this was how the narrator described the experience as “a moment of temporary mental apparition.” Now, people would only reflect on a decision as a moment of temporary insanity if the idea went very badly. This already sets the idea that the kidnapping did not work.

Another thing was that when they found Johnny, they saw that he was throwing rocks at a cat. Unless this was a common pastime for children when the story took place, one can easily notice that a child throwing rocks at a cat has a messed up idea of right and wrong, and has lots of pent up energy. These two are not really good characteristics for a kidnapping victim, especially once we look at the two main character’s next mistake: The two kidnappers did not bring a rope or any device to bind the child. If they just brought a rope and tied the child up, Bill would not have gone through such torture, which would let the kidnapping go hundreds of times more smoothly then it did

One of the kidnappers next mistake was how they wrote their ransom letter. If the two kidnappers used a more forceful tone while writing the letter, maybe adding phrases that suggested that they could not guarantee the child’s safety or anything that would make the father more desperate or worried about the child, the father would me more likely to pay the ransom. Also, the fact that they signed the letter as “two desperate men” may have given the father the idea that he could use the kidnappers to his advantage. If they signed the letter as just “two men,” that would have made them seem more professional and tougher, thus giving a higher chance of the father paying the ransom.

Be yourself

The times that you are the most yourself are when you are young, and when you are old. When you are young, you feel free to express yourself, and you have a big imagination and do not try to hide or copy others. When you are old, you realize that you have less summers behind you than ahead of you, and you also try to do things you like, and not try to hide yourself, because you don’t care about others’ opinions now. It is when you are middle aged though, when you take other’s opinions and try to ‘fit in’. There are four ‘yous’, and they are your ego, your actual self, what you want yourself to be, and what others want you to be. When you are not old and also not young, you take other people’s opinions very seriously, and try to shape yourself into what they want, so they will like you more.

There is something called a ‘true mirror’. Usually, a mirror will show that you raised your right hand if you raise your left hand, but that’s not how a true mirror works. People look in mirrors to check their appearance every day, but what they see in a mirror is actually not what other people see. To make one, you can either use a digital (phone/computer) mirror and turn the ‘mirror effect’ off in the video settings, or you can mirror a mirror, and it will be a ‘true mirror’. A true mirror shows exactly what you do, so it will show that you raised your right hand if you raised your right hand. Your unconscious self makes you tilt your head to one side, and you should check a true mirror sometime to fix it. There are many things about being yourself, and you shouldn’t try to be what others want you to be, or just pride, but truly yourself. Making yourself ‘fit in’ with other people’s opinions might seem good, but you should really just be yourself.

The Ransom of Red Chief

Usually, during a kidnapping, a person is kidnapped, and the family of that person is forced to give the kidnappers money for the person to be released. However, Ransom of Red Chief by O. Henry, challenges this fact. Two men, Bill and Sam, kidnap Ebenezer Dorset’s son. At first, they charge 2000 for the returning of his kid. However, after getting physically abused by the kid, Bill convinces Sam to only charge 1500 for the kid. After the kid annoyed Bill even more, Bill and Sam accept a deal with Ebenezer to pay Ebenezer 250 dollars for the kid instead. Henry uses irony to further the claim that you will get punished for doing bad things.

The first example is the relationship between the kidnappers and the kidnapped. During an usual kidnapping, the kidnapped is deeply afraid of the kidnapper. However, during The Ransom of Red Chief, the Red Chief instead terrorizes the kidnappers, especially Bill, by doing this such as “put[ting] a red-hot boiled potato down [Bill’s] back”. The ransomers sign their note as “two desperate men” showing that they are in need of money alongside the fact that they can’t stand the Red Chief. The two kidnappers were punished by having to endure through the Red Chief’s physical abuse.

The second example is, of course the ransom. It is strange to think that someone would have to pay money to get there loved ones back, but this is exactly what happens. At first, they charge 2000, but then change it to 1500 after Bill told Sam that he was “willing to take a chance at fifteen hundred dollars” and that “[Sam] can charge the difference up to me.” And at the end, they have to actually pay 250 dollars to get rid of the Red Chief, with Bill saying, “One more night of this kid will send me to a bed in Bedlam.” To show they really should take the deal. This is their punishment – instead of earning the 2000 they needed, they lost 250 dollars.

The Ransom of Red Chief uses irony to make a point. Instead of gaining money, the kidnappers lost 250 dollars and got physically abused. From this Ebenezer uses irony to make the point that you will get punished for bad things.

The Ransom of Red Chief Summary and Theme

Bill and Sam, two outlaws, are seeking for an effortless two grand, “to pull of a fraudulent town-lot scheme in Western Illinois with.” The two conceive a plan to kidnap and ransom Johnny, a 10 year old son of Ebenezer Dorset, a rather wealthy figure. They kidnap the youngling and take him to a cave hideout, however Johnny begins to abuse the men. In his fantasy game of Cowboys and Indians, calling himself “Red Chief” the boy drives both men crazy, notably Bill. With ridiculous foolishness, childish demands and mild physical abuse, the boy demands they entertain him, refusing to return to his home even when they release him from his captivity out of desperation to be rid of his outrageous behavior. The criminals write a ransom letter to “Red Chief’s ” father, decreasing the previous ransom form two thousand to one thousand five hundred. Unfortunately Dorset, knows the boy is a terror and rejects his offer. Dorset decides to propose that he will take the boy from them if they pay him two hundred fifty dollars. Bruised, disheartened, and their hopes reduced by the trials of parenting, Bill and Sam hand over the cash and trick the despondent boy into returning to his wealthy family. Dorset restrains Johnny long enough for the outlaws to depart from town and run away.

I think the theme is , the danger of trying to take the simple way out. Bill and Sam, ”needed just two thousand dollars more to pull off a fraudulent town-lot scheme in Western Illinois with.” Working hard instead of running scams probably never occurred to these two, but as it turns out, kidnapping is not as easy as they imagined it to be. The barbarian child that they decide to take ends up being hard, if not impossible, to handle. In the end, they must pay the boy’s father to take him off their hands. After a few days of babysitting Johnny, Bill and Sam end up backwards financially. Perhaps there is no easy way to financial success .

Counting COVID-19 Deaths

As COVID-19 deaths keep on increasing, knowing the exact number is important. However, some problems prevent the number from being accurate. One of them is that the definition of a coronavirus death may differ between states. Some count people who died having both the virus and other health problems while others don’t. This can cause inaccuracy as we don’t have an official definition of a COVID-19 death. Some states also aren’t willing to disclose death count information as they are scared that it will be used for other purposes that may be damaging to them.

A possible solution to this is for all of the states in America to make a compromise. Something that can be done is for a health agency such as CDC to help figure out an easier way to confirm a COVID-19 death and also decide what exactly is the definition of a coronavirus death. A possible definition for a coronavirus death is people who died while experiencing serious symptoms caused by COVID-19. Even if a victim had other health conditions, if he/she had severe COVID-19 symptoms, then it will be counted as a coronavirus death. To further confirm it, autopsies could also be done. Autopsies are rarely performed and can be expensive so a change that could be done is for autopsies to be free and done on every single uncertain death. This also means more people trained in doing autopsies as there aren’t as many workers. Another thing that can be done is for people to not be scared of going to the hospital if sick so doctors can make sure what deaths were caused by.

COVID-19 isn’t something that will just go by very fast and to solve it, we all need to work together smoothly as a country to get all the necessary information and enforce laws to protect people.

Red Chief Summary

First, at the beginning of the story, These people, Sam and Bill, needed some money. Two thousand dollars to be exact. So, how were they going to make two thousand dollars? Kidnapping of course! They planned to kidnap a rich guy’s son, named Red Chief. They drove by his house. Red chief was playing outside, when Bill offered to give him candy and a ride. Red Chief threw a brick at Bill’s face, and then Bill went outside to get Red Chief into the buggy, which they were driving, and take off. They take Red Chief to a cave. Then Bill and Red Chief play Indian. After they did that, they ate bacon and bread and gravy for dinner. Then he made a speech at dinner. And then they learned that he didn’t want to go home or school. And he was thrilled to stay at the cave for a little longer. They went to bed at about eleven o’clock. They slept on the ground with blankets and quilts. Then, Red Chief tried to kill Bill with a knife used to cut bacon. Sam took the knife away. Then, Sam threatens to take Red Chief home if he doesn’t behave. Red Chief starts to obey. Then he sends a letter to the Red Chief’s dad asking for fifteen hundred dollars for the return of his son. Then, the father replies that they give him two hundred and fifty dollars to return his son. So that is what Sam and Bill did.

Happy TUESDAY

This is why the kidnapped boy in O . HENRY’s “The Ransom of Red Chief” is the weirdest person ever.

First of all, when he gets kidnapped, instead of running away or frantically asking for help (Like I would’ve done), he decides to throw a brick at the kidnapper’s eye. But when you take a step back and think about it, he’s just a ten-year-old. With a brick. There are two kidnappers and they both are way older than the happy little boy playing with bricks out on the street. And they probably have a lot of experience to aid them in capturing the boy as well because they have, as the story says, “stood by [each other] without batting an eye in earthquakes, fire and flood—in poker games, dynamite outrages, police raids, train robberies and cyclones” (19). … So just attacking his kidnappers with a brick is a really weird decision to make.

Second of all, this boy thinks taking the scalp off of Bill is a good idea. I mean, if he was Make Believe-ing, then I suppose that would be all right, but when Sam wakes up abruptly to find Bill screaming like a girl and the boy on him, holding a knife to his head, that’s… a bit weird (and disturbing too). I even found a quote for this one: “[Sam] was awakened by a series of awful
screams from Bill … and [Red Chief] was industriously and realistically trying to take Bill’s scalp, according to the sentence that had been pronounced upon him the evening before” (15). Ten-year-olds may not be old enough to attack two grown men, but ten-year-olds sure are old enough to know that that first night was a much better opportunity to escape than to further convince the kidnappers that they need to keep an eye on him at all times. Like I said, weird. But, the boy doesn’t seem to want to go back to his home either, which leads to my next point.

Third of all, the boy needs to know that it’s a lot safer in his own house than outside in the wilderness with two kidnappers who are only keeping you for money. I just can’t believe that he would rather stay in the cave and try to damage the kidnappers even more than go home and play with his family and possibly even friends. He literally says, “I never had such fun in all my life” (14). Oh yes, definitely, I would love to camp out with my kidnappers and play games with them and eventually even try to take the scalp out of one of them! It’s still really weird how he’s enjoying all this.

In the end, even the kidnappers would relinquish their dream of receiving two thousand dollars just to give him back to his father, Ebenezer Dorset (And he knows that no one can stand living with the boy). Surely, this means that the kidnapped boy in this story is truly, truly, weird.
