Planet Earth is gradually warming up. Climate change came faster than any researcher or expert could have predicted. The effects of global warming and climate change is already making an impact on the world. Temperatures have risen by about 2.6 Fahrenheit. Ice glaciers and ice sheets around the world are melting at a quick pace. In fact, many scientists and experts wonder if it is too late to save our planet from climate change. Global warming needs to be stopped, as it is altering Earth’s climate, including its oceans, atmosphere, ice, and animals.

Global warming is the increase in the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere. In the recent years, Earth has already begun seeing the effects of global warming. Ice sheets and glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica have already begun melting at a rapid pace. Both ice sheets lose more than one hundred gigatons every year. If those ice sheets continue melting, sea levels will inevitably rise even more. Sea levels rise about one or two millimeters each year, while the Earth is getting even warmer. When ice melts, it adds water into oceans, causing the them to rise. This can lead to flooding, and risks the many homes and lives. As if this issue was not pressing enough, there is more damage that global warming can cause to the Earth.

Many experts predict that in the next couple decades, temperature on Earth could increase by eight degrees Fahrenheit. This is called climate change. Climate change can cause more severe weather conditions such as heat waves, floods, and droughts. These not only cause many deaths each year, but also costs tons of money to fix. A hotter atmosphere can change wet areas to dry, cold areas to hot, and vice verse. A hotter atmosphere is also a reason ice around the world is melting at such a quick pace, causing higher sea levels. A warmer planet can, and already has costed people their lives, money, homes, and more.

Researchers are constantly wondering whether it is too late to save the planet. Ice is melting all around the world, temperatures are rising along with the sea, and animals are dying. Experts suggest that the main cause of global warming is humans. Carbon pollution, burnt fossil fuels, chopping down forests, are all influences of people on Earth. Cars release carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming. The Earth’s climate is hotter than ever before. Researches suggest that humans should be more energy efficient, and care more about the environment. Humans can resort to solar powered items, and walking instead of driving. Humans can also stop chopping down trees. Trees are the habitat for hundreds of species. By making small changes, humans can not only save the lives of many species, but lower temperatures and sea levels. If humans do not want their home to begin melting, they need to make a change.

Self isolation could be worse than any other punishment for prisoners. Of course, physical punishments such as death penalty could be bad, but psychological torture is much worse. Solitary confinement is widely used in prisons worldwide, usually violating human rights. Boredom is not the only effect of isolation. Solitary confinement for long periods of time can mentally harm the prisoner, causing them to take drastic measures. Prisons that use this immoral and unethical way of punishment push away the media, and silence those with information. Solitary confinement can greatly harm a person mentally and physically, and such a practice should not be legal.

Confinement lengths can range from around a day, to even months. Those sentenced to isolation would be put all alone in a tiny cell and are hardly every let out. In the US alone, hundreds of thousands of prisoners have been sentenced to self isolation for very long periods of time, and the numbers still rise. Usually, solitary confinement is used for the suicidal, dangerous, or those who have other related mental illnesses. For those suffering from mental illness or other related sickness, self isolation should be the very last choice. Self isolation could actually drive the prisoner insane, causing them to do even more dangerous things. Solitary confinement last a long time, and can cause insanity in many different ways.

Many prisoners who have experienced self isolation have described their horrible experiences. Being isolated for long periods of time can cause a person to question themselves. Without any connection to the outside world, many prisoners find themselves taking desperate measures. Some would yell as loud as they could to try and communicate with other prisoners. Others resorted to harmful methods such as self harming and suicide, and many were successful. Some prisoners who have experienced solitary confinement could not even describe the experience into words, so they use forms of art instead. Solitary confinement has permanently affected prisoners in some of the worst ways possible.

Some might argue that the worst and most terrible criminals deserve such physiological torture. This is wrong, as solitary confinement should never be the correct choice. It is the human right of the prisoner to have have access to the outside world. If criminals should have the right to hire a lawyer or attorney, why should prisoners be deprived of their basic human right of social communication. If it comes to a certain point, there are other methods of punishments such as the death penalty. This goes to show that solitary confinement is not the right method for helping or punishing prisoners.

To make the situation even worse, little is known about solitary confinement use in prisons. Prisons usually block out the media, refusing interviews and journalists. Mail is even prohibited or tampered with. On the rare occasion of a family member being allowed to visit, they will be tightly monitored, in case any information is leaked. If a family member somehow got important information, the would be sworn to secrecy, as a result of the government. Prisons block out the media, giving them full control over prisoners, leaving them helpless.

Solitary confinement can substantially harm a human being mentally and physically, and such a practice should never be allowed. Isolation can cause prisoners to take desperate measures, causing them to self harm, and drives others to suicide. Prisons block out the media, a silence those with an opinion. No matter how big of a crime, prisoners should never be sentenced to such inhumane practices.

The amazing material, graphene, may take over the world someday. Graphene is a man made substance with many helpful uses. This material is not only hard as steel, but yet also elastic and rubbery. Scientists have already begun researching ways to create and use graphene day by day. Researchers are trying to take advantage of how sturdy and conductive graphene is, and they are beginning to seek new ways on improving the daily lives of people. As many experts begin to discover new ways to create this strong and reliable material, other researchers explore new and innovative ways to incorporate graphene into items.

Graphene was first discovered in 2004, by two researchers named Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov, both working at the University of Manchester. The two researchers found out that they could create graphite by simply touching tape onto a piece of graphite, peeling it off, folding, and repeat. It was not a very difficult process. They not only created graphene, but were able to prove its strength and flexibility. Years later, researchers are working on ways to best use graphene’s impressive properties. This discovery caused much excitement in people around the world, and left many wondering about all the possibilities and ways they could use graphene.

Using tape is not the only way graphene can be made. There is a very efficient method called Chemical Vapor Deposition. CVD includes growing graphene on a metal surface. Then, experts combine it with high-temperature gases and metals, and finally it can be used and deposited on the substance that needs enhancing. Another method experts discovered involves flash graphene. This is as simple as turning trash into something much more useful. Experts can use literally any thing that is high in carbon, and turn it into graphene. This method requires very high heat, almost 5000 degrees, and only takes around ten seconds. This method seems amazing, but it takes an extreme amount of heat to produce a normal amount of graphene. Flash graphene is much easier to create graphene and takes less time than CVD. Both methods are a quick way to create graphene, but it takes lots of thought and money to produce the a small amount. That is the reason why graphene and graphene incorporated items are rarely seem. Until further research, experts are stuck with using quick, yet dangerous and expensive methods to create graphene.

Even though it is very tough and costly to produce large amounts of graphene at once, using the small amounts available, researchers have already found ways to incorporate graphene in many items.  Many researchers are trying to involve graphene with health. They believe that graphene’s thick, durable composition could be ideal for improving people’s health. Some may even be able to wear graphene as contact lenses. Apart from using graphene for health purposes, scientists have found other ways to benefit from graphene. An Italian company, Italcementi, suggest that people should incorporate graphene into cement. As a result of graphene’s ability to conduct electricity and heat, graphene has become one of the most conductive substance researchers have even come across. Using graphene in cement, can not only bring heat throughout homes, but also cause heat to disappear, which would lessen the need for air conditioning in many homes. Researchers have already found out many ways in which graphene could be useful, and will only continue discovering new and advanced ways to include graphene in items.

Ray Bradbury’s, A Sound of Thunder, takes place in a post-modern world where humans are able to travel through time. A man named Eckels, and a hunting group go back into the past to hunt down a dinosaur. The group quickly finds the dinosaur, and it approaches them at a fast pace. After seeing the dinosaur in person, Eckels becomes afraid and decides to go back. Since Eckels was so afraid, he accidentally abandons the path back to the time machine. He later discovers that when he strayed away from the path, he had stepped on a single butterfly. The group later discovers that this small butterfly changed the entire future drastically. When the group arrives back to their time, they find out that things were different. The new world had different languages, new presidents, new smells, and so much more. Everything in the world had changed because of the hunting group’s small mistakes. Throughout the story, Ray Bradbury adds numerous clues of symbolism to further enhance the plot of the story, and possibly teach a lesson.

One example of symbolism is the frequently occurring thunder. The subject of thunder is introduced several times throughout the story. When the dinosaur approached the group, it came with great flashing thunder. When Travis was about to shoot Eckels, there was also a sound of thunder. Thunder is typically a frightening occurrence, and can represent many different things. In this case, thunder represents danger and death. The first time thunder was brought into the story was when the dinosaur was charging at the hunting group. It was as if the thunder was introducing the deadly dinosaur, hinting to the hunting members that they were facing danger, and possibly death. Bradbury includes a second flash of thunder when Travis was holding a gun to Eckels’ head. At that moment, thunder flashed, hinting that Travis had shot Eckels, leaving him dead. By including thunder throughout the story, Bradbury is able to foreshadow and show the dangers of the hunting group’s choices.

In the story, the path that is taken to the time machine was greatly emphasized. Bradbury even capitalized the words “the Path”, to further demonstrate its significance. The Path was described as narrow, meaning there was no room for even the smallest of mistakes. When Eckels saw the terrifying figure of the Tyrannosaurus Rex, he fled back to the time machine, straying away from the original path. This is another act of symbolism that Bradbury puts into the story. The path that is mentioned in the article can also represent the path that life takes, also known as destiny. Eckels was supposed the follow the correct path back to the time machine. He failed to do so, and because he was so afraid, he strayed from the original path. Altering the path could greatly affect the future, and the same goes for life. The Path is a symbolic message, suggesting that if someone strays apart from their path of life, it could lead to the entire future being changed.

Frank Stockton’s “The Lady or the Tiger”, is an exciting and shocking story, mostly because of its open ending. Rather than arriving at a resolution, the short story closes with an open ending, leaving readers guessing. The ending of the story was unusual and begun numerous discussions and controversies. Stockton left readers debating between two very hard choices. An answer to this infinitely confusing question is presented here, along with supporting statements. 

In the short story “ The Lady or the Tiger”, there is a semi-barbaric king. The king had a strange method for the man who had fallen in love with his daughter. This man was to choose between two doors. Behind one of the doors was a savage tiger who will likely jump upon him and tear him to shreds. Behind the other was a lady, deemed appropriate by the king, whom the man shall marry. Choosing the door containing the tiger would declare the man as guilty, and send him to his death. If the man chose the door with the lady, he would be proven innocent, and is to marry the woman instantly. Based on whatever door the man chose, it would determine whether he was guilty or innocent, and whether he should live or die. 

Once the barbaric king found out about his daughter’s lover, he was furious, and decided to punish the man. He sentenced the convict to the two-door method that was mentioned before. The princess that the convicted man loved was extremely beautiful, and has a similar barbaric personality to her father. When the important day came, hundreds of citizens filled the amphitheater, excited and ready to see the fate of the man. Before choosing a door, the man glanced at the princess, as though he was asking for help. She held her right hand on her lap, secretly telling the man to choose the door on the right. Earlier that day, the princess had used her power and status to find out what was behind both the doors. The man went to that door and decisively opened it. The story ends there, giving readers a choice to finish it, while leaving them wondering.

There are many clues in throughout the story that suggests that the door contained a lion. First of all, if the princess chose the door with the lady, she would have a living reminder of her bad choice. Seeing her enemy and her loved one be together everyday will surely inflict more pain on the princess than anything else. Some might say that if she kills her loved one, it would be a lot more painful than seeing him marry another woman. This may not be the case, because the princess believes in the afterlife. If she was confident they would be together even after death, then she would have no trouble killing the man she loved. Choosing the tiger door saves the princess from the pain of watching the man she loves marry another lady.

In the story, it says “This semi-barbaric king had a daughter as blooming as his most florid fancies, and with a soul as fervent and imperious as his own.” This tells readers that the princess is as barbaric as her father. To be barbaric means to be cruel and uncivil. If she chose the door with the tiger, it most likely will not faze her as much as a normal person. Moreover, if the princess truly is similar to her father, she could be having the same thought process as him. The father thinks the lover is guilty and deserves to die. Of course, it is true that in the story is clearly stated that the two were close, but if the princess truly loved the man, she would not have had such a hard time choosing. If she truly loved the man, she would never want him to get hurt in any way. Even if she believed in afterlife, true love would overcome any beliefs that she had.

Any conclusions that readers come up with will take a lot of thought and consideration. Frank Stockton’s, “The Lady or the Tiger” is like maze that it yet to be finished. The author clearly states that the princess is similar to her father. She is a woman who wants to settle down her emotions, and get justice at the same time. The short story shows many clues that can help readers find a conclusion. As a result of these subtle hints, it is safe to say that the tiger was behind that door.

While exploring Mars, the question of habitation or colonization will inevitably come up. Many dream about sending men to the Mars, and researchers debate on whether they should terraform Mars into a livable habitat. Humans are missing many variables to surviving on Mars. The Red Planet is a dangerous place, and researchers are still unaware of many things. Taking risks is never an option for science, as it could lead to many dangers. Turning Mars into a habitable place could be a future possibility, but there are many downsides and things that need to be done.

Even after much research, there is still so much humans do not know about Mars. One main issue that stands in researchers’ way is whether Mars holds life to indigenous species. They could greatly affect the native habitats that are on Mars. Of course, there is a very small chance that there truly are things living things on Mars. The Red Planet is a new place that could possibly be useful in the future, so it needs to be well preserved as much as possible. Humans beings have already done so much damage to their own planet, and they can not risk destroying another. To secure humans long term survival, it is best to preserve Mars for other purposes such as academic reasons. Instead of transforming this new planet into something to suit someone’s own desires, humans should appreciate the differences in the two planets, and peacefully coexist.

There are even more risks to transforming this new planet. Contamination could get in the way of researchers learning about Mars. When sending spacecrafts and other types of space technology, there is a very strong chance that Earth’s bacteria and microorganisms will be released into space. These things could very well land in Mars and live among any other types of living organisms, causing complications. Researchers will be unable to differentiate whether the life form is contamination, or a living things from Mars. This method might depend on whether there truly is any living things on Mars or not, but taking risks is not a reliable way for science. If a risk is taken, and it turned out to be the wrong choice, it could greatly affect the study of Mars forever.

Even if there are no such living organisms on Mars, there are still so many risks for colonization. On Mars, the pressure of the atmosphere is less than one percent of the pressure of Earth’s atmosphere. This means that any liquid brought onto Mars will most likely freeze. Researches found out that there is not enough carbon dioxide on Mars to provide stable greenhouse warming. This allows researchers to conclude that terraforming Mars with current technology is not possible. Even if people eventually come up with stronger and better technology to block out all the negative things about Mars, there is the ethical part that needs to be considered. Humans should not be focusing on creating new technology so they can change and colonize other planets, and focus on recovering their own planet. There is still a very long way to go before anything can be done about Mars.

Mars is a dangerous place full with risks. Researchers still have so much that they are unaware of. It is still not known if there are living organisms on Mars. Accidentally contaminating Mars is also very likely, and can ruin researchers’ studies on Mars. There are so many negative factors such as not enough tech, not enough CO2, and so much more. Taking risks may not be the right way to answer all the questions about Mars. If even the smallest thing goes wrong, it could prevent researchers from learning about Mars. In conclusion, Mars should not be changed.

Fake news has turned the internet into a dangerous place. Lies, deep fakes, hackers, and more, all make the internet a threatening place. Although fake news sounds like a very bad idea, there are ways fake news can help people and the media. There are tons of media related jobs out there, and fake news bolsters salaries and pay rates. People love seeing new and exciting news, so false news reports could sometimes be ideal to people. Surprisinly, fake news be helpful, and could keep millions of people employed.

Once a fake tweet, or post of some sort comes out to the public, the rate the news spreads is unimaginable. An example of how quickly fake news can spread was with The AP Twitter had been hacked by hackers. They released fake news publicly, claiming that current president Barack Obama was injured by explosions. As soon as the hackers tweeted this, the fake news spread like wildfire. Within about a day, the tweet had gotten almost four thousand retweets. This goes to show how quickly false news can spread. Some say that “fake news takes a world-trip before the truth even puts on its boots.” Because the public loves seeing new and exciting things, many would want to know more about it. People will most likely turn to the news or the internet.

News channels, news writers, and journalists solely rely on news. Without a topic to write or discuss about, these organizations are likely to fail. The biggest papers written by journalists can increase their salary by more than thirty thousand. Not only this, but college publications can be greatly affected. Many college publications have already shut down due to the fact that they were heavily in debt. The University of North Carolina’s newspaper staff all got pay cuts because they were going broke. The list of publishers forced to shut down can go on and on. The reason for their debt was most likely the result of not receiving enough public attention. Fake news catches the attention of millions of curious readers and listeners. Fake news gives these organizations an exciting and unheard of topic to write about. News channels, writers, and journalists are not the only ones affected by fake news. In fact, any person or group who work for media related purposes will always be affected by fake news, one way or another. News, whether true or false, is the sole foundation of millions of jobs.

A Rose For Emily, written by William Faulkner, is a short story about very mysterious old woman named Emily Grierson. Emily lives on a very select street in a small town in Jefferson, Mississippi. Throughout her young life, her father constantly turned away many worthy suitors. When she grew older, she quickly falls in love with a foreman from a construction company named Homer Barron. After the traumatizing death of her father, Emily was worried that another loved one would leave her. To prevent being abandoned, Emily ends the relationship by poisoning Homer, so she could “be with him forever”. At Emily’s death, Homers decomposed body was found along with a strand of iron-gray hair. At first read, Emily seems to be a mysterious and cruel type of person. Throughout the entire story, William Faulkner included many hints of symbolism to prove that otherwise, and to intensify the dark and mysterious plot.

A major symbol in the story was Emily’s house. Emily Grierson went through some very similar changes to her house. Her house was described as “white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street.” Her new and beautiful house drastically turned into an old, smelly and foul home. Emily went through some related changes. Before her fathers death, Emily was a youthful and active person. When her father died, Emily refused to let go of the past, and declined the offer to bury her father. These events caused her to become unhinged, and she descends into a state of madness where she is never once seen leaving her house. Her insanity eventually led to her killing her husband. Just like her house, Emily started off as new, and nice, but slowly became deteriorated and ruined.

Although it may seem subtle, Emily’s hair was an example of her current well being, and the type of person she was. Throughout the story, Emily’s hair was constantly changing. After the death of her father, Emily was seen with her hair was cut short, making her look like “a girl, with a vague resemblance to those angels in colored church windows–sort of tragic and serene.” This could show that she was mentally unstable and going insane, causing her to chop off all of her hair. In the end, Homer’s body is found, along with a strand of Emily’s iron-gray hair. The grey hair meant that Emily was laying beside the dead corpse of his love for quite a long time. This allows the readers to conclude that Emily truly loved Homer, even though she was the one to take his life. It is safe to conclude that Emily did not have any malicious intent to hurt Homer, she was just bound by her fear of being abandoned. The strand on Emily’s pillow can show a lot of things about Emily’s personality and her true intent.

Although the story is called A Rose For Emily, the subject of a rose was never once mentioned in the story. Typically, a rose is a symbol of love and passion. In the story, the rose symbolized Emily’s love life. Emily never had many chances to have love. When she was younger, it was mentioned that her father would turn away any suitors for Emily, without her permission. Emily was not shown much love throughout her whole life. The only person who cared about her was her father, who eventually died. Emily felt as if her “rose” was taken from her. Emily finally recovered and found love with Homer Barron, and felt like her “rose was given back to her”. The relationship did not last because Emily was so afraid of being abandoned, or having her “rose” taken away from her, that she killed him. The rose in the title symbolized Emily’s love life.

In William Faulkner’s, A Rose for Emily, Emily is a mysterious person to the townsfolk and the readers. Many would conclude that Emily is an evil person who brutally murdered the one person she loved. To subtly prove these assumptions wrong, William includes many subtle symbols of Emily’s true personality and intent. Things like her old deteriorating house, her silver hair, and a rose all show Emily’s real self. These hidden symbols show that Emily never had malicious intent, and was only love deprived. Although indistinct, William Faulkner presented many hidden symbols of Emily.

Many people all over the world have bad habits that they want to change about themselves, but the most of them are doing it the wrong way. The majority of people threaten themselves with results that could happen if they did not change their bad habits. Although it may not seem like it, warnings have little to no impact one’s behavior. These things can actually cause a person to lose motivation. The main reason that threats and warnings do not work, is all because of the way our mind is. When a normal human being encounters something negative or dangerous, they tend to become scared. Their initial response is to freeze, run, or give up. Humans almost never try to fight back the negativity or danger. There are many other positive ways to change a person’s bad behavior without having to use negative and discouraging methods.

A great way for a person to change is to constantly give themselves rewards. If most humans do not get a reward after hard work at trying to change, they will feel as if they can not change. This can cause lack of motivation and turn into lack of energy. Sometimes, the reward could actually be the result of all the hard work that someone put into changing. However, everyone is different, and some take ages to see results. This is where other types of rewards come in. For example, if someone who wants to lose weight exercises very well one day, they can reward themselves to an extra drink. Yes, maybe that method of rewarding could cancel out the hard work, but our brains need that motivation. Rewards are motivating and assuring for someone who wants to change.

When working towards a goal, monitoring one’s progress is very important. People love seeing results in their hard work, and it can cause someone to become more motivated. The best way to effectively monitor a person’s progress is to put some sort of daily reminder of how well they are doing. For example, they can try putting a paper up on their mirror, so everyday when that person goes to use the mirror, they are reminded that they are progressing. This method seems very good, but there are some downsides to it. Some people progress slower than others, and will become less and less motivated. When seeing little to no results, that person will naturally think that they have failed. This is why people should change the way they think.

Though it might not be easy to change a one’s thought process, there are many ways to do it. For example, instead of focusing on far someone is from their goal, that person should focus on how much closer they are getting. However, if the goal is truly too far and unachievable, they should consider coming up with a more realistic goal. Also, people should not be afraid of failure. Yes, failure can be very dangerous, and can cause someone to lose motivation and hope very quick, but it is a very good way of informing the person of what not to do when achieving a certain goal. Changing one’s thought process can easily influence they way they do things, for the better.

Change is not an easy process. There are methods to changing one’s behavior, and negativity should not be one of them. People need to know that using threats and warnings about the future only causes them to become less and less motivated. Instead, using positive things like reminders of progress and rewards are some very good ways to effectively change. Changing, although it may not seem like it, is all in one’s thought process. Keeping a positive thought process could be the one thing that changes everything. There are many way of changing, people just need to use the right method.

The essay, A Modest Proposal, is a satirical essay written by Jonathon Swift. Satire work is used to mock or criticize an aspect on a certain issue. In the essay, Swift saw the degrading lives that many poor Irish people were living, so his goal was to improve the lives of all the poverty-stricken families in Ireland. I was appalled at the fact that Swift thought selling and bartering children was a good solution to Ireland’s poor economic growth. The reason I suspected that it was satirical was because the proposal that Swift offered was so absurd and dishonorable, that no normal human being with morality would ever suggest such a plan. Swift is a good man who knows his morals, and cares for Ireland and its people.

Ireland, as the essay states, was not doing well financially at the time. Swift was aware of this, and used his essay to voice his anger the incompetence of the English and the politicians. To Swift, Ireland has failed on improving the living conditions of many citizens, and he was very angry. The Irish were being useless, and were unable to survive on their behalf. Swift grew impatient and irritated, so he believed something had to be done.

In the essay, Swift mentioned many inhumane methods to help change Ireland and their financial instability. He suggested sadistic methods, like selling children to eat, or make things out of their dead corpses. He stated that Ireland could use children as slaves, or women as breeders. I believe that Swift purposely emphasized how cruel these methods were. I suggest that Swift was trying to warn the leaders of Ireland, that if the politicians and the wealthy of Ireland did not make a change soon, they may actually have to resort to such methods.

Throughout the whole essay, Swift made it very clear that he was aggrivated at Ireland. He showed great compassion for the less fortunate. A Modest Proposal shows Swift’s utter disgust at the Irish people’s seeming inability to mobilize on their own behalf. It is obvious Swift wants improve the lives of all the poverty-stricken families in Ireland. This allows me to come to the conclusion that Dr. Jonathon Swift is a good man.
