How we can Protect Truth in the Age of Misinformation

In the Ted talk of Misinformation, one person talked about how misinformation affects society and how they are trying to stop it.

One time, there was a tweet about how the White House was bombed and President Barack Obama was injured from the bombing. There were over four thousand retweets on this within less than five minutes. This was tweeted by serial hackers. The stock market was hit, wiping out 139 billion dollars with a single day.

The false news travel much deeper, faster, and farther than what truth news would. They wondered why it would travel much more. They thought it was because the people who tweeted the false news had more followers or followed more people. In fact, it was the total opposite. They had fewer followers, followed fewer people, were less active on the social media, and were on the media for much less time than people who sent the truth out to people. Despite these things, false and fake news had a better chance of being retweeted than the true news.

The human brain is drawn to new, surprising, and scarier news. Bots were not behind the false news, but humans. This is all the good news about the misinformation.

There is a generator network and a discriminator network. The generator is the noise source of the the media. There is a generator example and a real example. The generator example is the false example. The discriminator network shows which tweet is real or fake. The generator example is trying to fool the discriminator into thinking the fake is real.

An example is that a news reporter is making it look like that the White House intern. They removed frames from this video in order to make it seem very real. Stunt men and woman did this all the time in movies to make it realistic.

There are five different paths to try and address the difficult problems. The first one is labeling. In a grocery store, the products have labels to see how many calories and many more things about it. We don’t know where this information was gathered so it could be fake or real so we are consuming information.

What we don’t know is that who decides which tweet is fake and which is real. People can get advertising dollars for this and the serial hackers can be doing this for money, but we don’t know. We don’t know the dangers of this.

Malaysia created a law where if you were to tweet false and fake news, you were to be put in jail for six whole years. We are trying to end this, but it the best way is by humans not doing this.

By the false news rising and with us not knowing which is fake and which is real, this could be the end of reality with not knowing the knowledge of good and bad and fake and real.

Behavior Changes

There are reasons why people don’t listen to others and there are reasons why people do. It is all from the brain because of the positive effect and the negative effect on the brain.

Many people do not listen to others even when there are consequences and punishments in the future. They do not listen because people tell them that if one does something bad, then that one person will get punishment. Even when they say something like that, they still don’t listen.

Other people say that one will get rewards if they stop one thing or do something. Once that person says that, then that one will want to do it because of the positive thought that gets sent through the brain.

Do you know why the brain rejects negative thoughts? It is because the human brain rejects the negative thought and keep doing terrible things. When one says that there is a 60% chance that one will get a disease and there is a 40% chance that one will not. The human brain does not want 60% for bad things and wants 40% because they do not want any negative thought.

When one hears a positive thought about something, then one would like to do it because one does not want any negativity through one’s mind. Whenever one says that one will punish another unless if they start or stop something, then they probably will not listen because of the negativity (unless if it is physically making others suffer).

When one says to do something to get a reward, then they will do it. If one says to do something or else they will be punished, they will not. Age matters in the brain of a human because when time comes, you will have doubt that the positive thought will come true because of the probability and seeing the proof or denial.

Positive thoughts are one of the better ways of getting someone to do something and when they get into the habit, they will start doing what they are told because of the reward.

Seventh Grade

The short story, “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, is an amazing story about a person in seventh grade who likes a girl like every other people. I think people like this story because of the themes, about school, and the people inside the story.

Victor, a character in the story, carries a torch for a girl named Teresa. Teresa is in the same grade, the same French class, and the same English class as Victor, the protagonist. In English class, they were learning what nouns were and the teacher asked Victor what was an example of a noun and he said, Teresa. The teacher asked Victor what was an example of a place noun and he said Teresa’s house.

After the period, they were on break. Victor looked around to see if Teresa was around, but unfortunately, she was not. He kept looking around until he finally saw her and sat close to where she was. The break was over and after the bell rang, Teresa and Victor were going in the same direction, to French class.

During French class, their french teacher, Mr. Bueller, said hello in french as soon as everyone walked in they said it right back. Victor spoke up, trying to impress Teresa, but was very embarrassed because he did not know french and tried speaking in french with a french accent. At the end of class, Teresa spoke to him saying that she did not know that Victor could speak french. Victor was very proud and felt like seventh grade wasn’t going to be a bad year.

All of the themes in this story are fantastic and the one I like the most was be yourself, not anyone else. Being yourself will be the best way to show others what you are like. If you act like someone you are not, then once others find out, they might not like you.

Marco Polo’s Adventure

Marco Polo was one of the greatest adventurers in the world, and people even named a game after him. He was captured and brought to prison with no form of entertainment and he met a writer named Rustichello da Pisa. After Marco Polo shared all of his adventures, his friend, Rustichello da Pisa, thought it would be great to write a book about all of his exploits. Once they were released from prison, those two published the book and became an overnight bestseller. Marco Polo had become the first European to document many details and information about the Chinese Empire. When the book was published, many people had doubts that he actually traveled across the world with just one life and called him a liar and a fraud. What the people didn’t know was that every single story that he ever told was true and it would take the people many, many years before knowing the truth. Marco Polo’s father and uncle were traveling for most of his young life. They bought goods from countries that were not needed, but then sold them to countries where the product is more valuable. During Marco Polo’s adventures, he needed to go to China, but he could not sail because his family’s boat was being repaired, so he could not sail to China, but rather walk on his two legs. The journey would be a long one, but fortunately, they sent out on a path where they could stop in small cities for rest. They always had goods to sell to other countries, but it was exhausting for Marco Polo. Marco Polo was a trusted adviser and he was able to live among the royal court. Since Marco Polo could speak 5 different languages, he was very useful to the Mongolian empire. Marco Polo had many duties, even so, he still went out to enjoy all of the entertainment that the empire had to offer such as musicals, theaters, horse races, and many more. The Europeans had been frustrated by the thought of how China seemed to be better than Europe. Even when all of the adventures and exploits he had gone, his face and what he looked like is still a mystery to many people today. His adventures he has gone and all of his responsibilities are a fascinating story and inspiring story.

The Lottery

I think that “The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson, is a great story of irony and theme for real life. It has different themes such as human nature, family structure, and the role of gender, and dystopian society and conformity. Many people have their own opinions about “The Lottery”, but I am one who likes the short story mainly because of the main theme that is the mindless adherence to tradition. This book has a theme that I like the most which was the family structure. From what I have heard about families is that the poorer the family, the more love there is, but the more wealthy the family is, the less love there is within the house. This isn’t always true, but from my perspective, it is. Many people have their own story just like “The Lottery”, but the family structure in the Hutchinson household is not that very good because Tessie shows dislike and infuriates all those who do like the lottery that is in the story. I feel like the Hutchinson parents did not teach their kids very well because of how Tessie acts towards the lottery that was held. She was very churlish and insolent. She was very innocuous. “The Lottery is a very well done short story by Shirley Jackson and I would recommend many people read her short stories that are based on real-life and her themes that she puts in her stories are fascinating.
