The Mustache

The main character is a 17 year old boy named Mike. He grew a mustache and kept it, because he thought it would make him seem older and more mature, even though it had negative side effects. He gets charged full price at the theater, and because of this, doesn’t have enough money to take his girlfriend out to eat after they watch a movie. She doesn’t really like the mustache either. Mike tries really hard to be mature, maybe even too hard. He wants others to think of him as an adult and treat him like he’s not a kid. His actions throughout the story prove this.

During his drive to see his sick grandma, he wants to use his dad’s fast car, and go 75 miles per hour on the highway. But he thinks that speeding isn’t mature, so he uses an old station wagon and only goes 50 miles per hour on the highway. This further shows that Mike wants to seem grown up. While he’s in the hospital room with is grandma, she hallucinates and thinks that he is her husband. He plays along and doesn’t correct her because his mother told him to be gentle with his grandmother. He doesn’t want to upset her, and seem childish or immature.

At the end of his visit, he wants to tell his grandmother that he’s her grandson, not her husband. He even considers continuing pretending to be her husband, but he doesn’t say anything. He just silently leaves. On his way home, he drives 80 miles per hour on the highway. He blasts rock music at maximum volume. When he gets home, he didn’t tell his parents how his visit went. He goes upstairs, and shaves off his mustache. By taking these actions, he embraces his immaturity. But by embracing his immaturity and ending his quests to seem mature, he becomes more mature. He realizes being immature has its perks, and is going to make use of them while he still can.

Uncle Willy

In this story, the main character is a boy, who lives near a man everyone calls Uncle Willy. Uncle Willy is an eccentric man who runs a shop and gives out free ice cream to the children. He is also addicted to dope, an addictive drug. Some other people intervene with his drug addiction, and he runs away with the main character. One of the themes in this story is to think before you act.

One reason a theme is to think before you act is because the main character impulsively ran away with Uncle Willy. He didn’t prepare, or even say goodbye to the townspeople. He disregarded the consequences of running away with a strange man he didn’t know very well. He got caught up in the heat of the moment and didn’t step back and think about what he was about to do. His life at home wasn’t even that bad either, he just acted without thinking.

Another reason a theme in this story is to think before you act is because Uncle Willy changed negatively. He didn’t think before he took drugs, and he became addicted to them. Even though he had a reason to live the town, he didn’t have a good reason to bring the main character with him. He could have not told the main character he was leaving, and left by himself. He didn’t stop to think about how running away could affect the main character’s life.

The last reason a theme in this story is to think before you act is because the townspeople took away Uncle Willy’s drugs too abruptly. Even though they did it with good intentions, Uncle Willy had a withdrawal, and got really sick. The townspeople fixed one of Uncle Willy’s problems, but caused another one. This was probably a reason he left the town, which indirectly affected the main character.

A Sound of Thunder

In this story, the year is 2055 and the main character is a rich man named Eckels. There are time machines, and he goes on a time safari to hunt down dinosaurs. He accidentally kills a butterfly, which messes up a lot of major things in the future. To fix the problems, the people working at the time safari place have to kill Eckels and try to fix the problems he created. Because Eckels messed up, I think letting anyone go into the past shouldn’t be allowed.

I think not everyone should be able to go into the past because it is too dangerous and could change how a lot of things happen. Different animals species could live or die because of something someone did in the distant past. Depending on which types of life are changed, different human families could disappear, and completely new ones to replace them. Or, if someone did something really bad, the human race could have evolved into an entirely different species.

Not only could going to the past change a lot of things in the future, but it could also be dangerous for the people who go into the past. In the story, Eckels thinks that he is safe and that he can take down a Tyrannosaurus Rex without any problems, but once he faces it in reality, he panics and wants to run away. But running away would cause even more problems. People who think they can handle going into the past but really can’t would be a problem. They would endanger themselves and others around them.

Some people might say that they would be really careful, and wouldn’t panic. But they haven’t went into the past before, and have no experience with time traveling. I think some people should be able to go, but they should be trained for a long time so they can be prepared. The company in the story had guides, but that didn’t work. Eckels still did something wrong and messed up the future. So having guides wouldn’t work. The only way would be to only allow professionals into the past.

Ms. Awful

In this story, the main character is Roger, who is a boy in 3rd grade. He is very playful, and has a very laid back and lax teacher named Ms. Wilson. Then she leaves, and his class gets a very strict substitute teacher whose name is Ms. Orville. She embarrasses some of the children and their parents in front of everyone else, and she forces the children to do everything perfectly. In my opinion, she is a bad teacher.

I think Ms. Orville is a bad teacher because she is too strict. Even though students need a teacher who isn’t too laid back, they shouldn’t have a teacher who is too strict. She makes them march in a straight line in unison every single day, and assigns a lot more homework than they are used to. Even though it improved Roger’s spelling skills, this only happened because he tried really hard. It didn’t do much for the other kids.

Ms. Orville also yells at the 3rd graders whenever they make any kind of mistake. She expects eight and nine year olds to be completely mature and act like adults. Everyone needs to learn these things eventually, but I think it should be later in life. In 3rd grade, most kids don’t fully understand manners yet, and she is trying to teach little kids these things. I think students should start have strict teachers later in elementary school or in middle school. Or else the younger kids who have strict teachers won’t understand what their teachers are doing for them and hate their teacher.

Another reason I think she is a bad teacher is because I have a bias against strict teachers. I had a very strict teacher in 4th grade, who was similar to Ms. Orville. But she wasn’t as strict and didn’t make us march in a line. Even so, I hated her. The year before, I had a very laid back teacher who didn’t assign much homework. Then in 4th grade suddenly I had a teacher who yelled at us if we messed up at all and assigned a lot of homework. She only had one or two favorite students who liked her, but everyone else hated her.

Hearts and Hands

In this story, I think the lady, Miss Fairchild, is naive and sheltered. She meets an old friend, Mr. Easton, on a train who is handcuffed to a marshal. They trick her into believing that Mr. Easton is the marshal and the real marshal is the criminal. She believes their lie and doesn’t question it at all because she is upper class. Mr. Easton is upper class too, and Miss Fairchild thinks that another person who is upper class would never commit a crime.

Besides being naive and innocent, Miss Fairchild is impulsive. Miss Fairchild says she wants to move to the west, and she thinks she would live happy forever if she moved. She disregards all of the consequences that could happen, and makes a questionable choice on the spot. She ignores the hassle of moving all her belonging to a completely new place, and having to start a new life.

Miss Fairchild also obviously has never seen any criminals or any experience with them in general. Mr. Easton’s right hand is handcuffed to the marshal’s left hand, which makes sense because Mr. Easton’s dominant hand is his right hand. If he tried anything with his left hand, he would probably fail. Because Miss Fairchild failed to notice this, she was easily fooled.

Her actions in the story prove that Miss Fairchild is naive and ignorant. She doesn’t understand how the world works beyond the upper class. Even so, she has false beliefs about the upper class. She thinks that upper class are noble and are perfect. She is gullible and is easily fooled by others. If someone came to her and tricked her with malicious intent, she would be vulnerable.

The Lady, or the Tiger?

In the story, the king has created a new trial for criminals. They enter an arena and choose between two doors. One door has a lady the criminal will marry, and the other is a tiger who will kill the criminal. So there is no justice, the criminals live or die by chance. The king created this method so he and his subjects could have some entertainment.

The princess falls in love with a young man, and the king disapproves of their relationship. So he puts the man in the arena. The princess loves him, but she isn’t the lady behind the door. She knows which door is which and can help the young man survive. She points him to the door on his right. Then the story ends.

If she pointed him towards the door with the tiger, he will die. She will never see him again and lose him forever. If she pointed him towards the door with the lady, he will have to marry the lady and not the princess. The princess will not be able to marry him also, but he will still be alive. Either way, she loses him, but she can save his life.

A Rose for Emily

The main character of this story is a woman named Emily Grlerson. The story takes place a little after the civil war, and the town she lives in is in the South. She wasn’t very social with the other townspeople, so nobody knew her well. The story is about how Emily died, and some other stories about her.

The town that Emily lives in is corrupt. The mayor and authorities let Emily not pay taxes, because she is nobility. She ignores their letters, and when they visit her home, she tells them to go away and refuses to pay taxes. They don’t want to displease her, so they just leave her alone. This shows that even if a rich person breaks the law, they don’t do anything about it.

Later in the story, Emily’s house starts to leak a bad smell. The mayor wants to deal with it, but doesn’t want to confront Emily. They don’t confront her because she is a lady and they think telling her that her house smells would be rude. Even though they receive a complaint from one of her neighbours, they don’t talk to her about it. So they sneak around the house and try to fix it. This shows that they go to great lengths to not bother someone who they think is superior to them.

Near the end of the story, Emily goes to a druggist to buy some poison. She wants to kill the man she’s courting because he recently came out as gay. The druggist asks why she wants to buy the poison, and she just stares at him. He gets intimidated by her and makes up an excuse to himself of why she’s buying arsenic. He gets scared by her and feels overpowered. So he hands over the poison without asking any questions.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

In the story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the main character, Walter, is subservient to his wife. He doesn’t act like it, but he doesn’t really want to be obedient. He fantasizes about being a lot of things he isn’t, which shows how he really feels. Over the course of the story, he has five daydreams, each different from the other. In the first daydream, he is The Commander, who is a pilot. He charges right into a hurricane, and it ends with the crew saying how they trust him and how competent he is. He is independent and commanding, which is what he wants to be in real life.

In the second daydream, Walter is a surgeon, one of the best in the world. He is famous and is operating on a millionaire. He successfully saves the millionaire’s life by using a pen to substitute for a piston in a machine. This shows that he wants to be recognized and for other people to look up to him. In the third daydream, he is a criminal who is being convicted with murder. His attorney said that he couldn’t have committed the crime because his right arm was in a sling, but then Walter says that he did, and he can shoot accurately with his left arm from three hundred feet. He confesses and admits that he did kill the victim. He doesn’t try any trickery, and is noble about it. This shows he wants to be skilled, but his subservient side is coming out. In the first two daydreams, he is a leader, but this time he is a captured criminal.

In the fourth daydream, Walter is a captain in the military. He is about to go on a suicide mission and is drinking brandy. He seems calm and casual about it to the others with him, even though he would at least be a little scared. This shows that he wants to be tough and not show his emotions, but also he is starting to be more resigned to his fate of being subservient to his wife, just like the captain knew he was going to die. In the fifth daydream, he is a criminal again. Walter is about to be killed by a firing squad, and he takes off the handkerchief covering his face. He faces the firing squad, and accepts his fate. This shows that he has accepted the fact that his wife has power over him. At the beginning, he wanted to be defiant and rebellious, but at the end he knows those are things he isn’t.

Coronavirus Robot

Trinity’s Robotics and Innovation Lab are making a robot that can help disinfect areas that could potentially be infected with COVID-19. The robot, whose name is Violet, uses UV-C light to disinfect. UV-C light causes DNA to change or cut up genetic material. Viruses have DNA, and UV-C causes the virus to cut itself up. Then the virus dies because it doesn’t have the capabilities to repair itself.

Violet is going to help combat coronavirus by a lot. Robots are usually made for tasks that are too boring or dangerous for humans to do. Disinfecting places is one of the things that robots excel at. This robot will make the areas it’s used in a lot safer, because it cleans everywhere. A human might miss a few spots, and someone could get sick. Violet cleans perfectly, reducing the risk of someone catching COVID-19.

Other companies all over the world are developing disinfectant robots too. This is a huge step towards fighting the coronavirus. Before the pandemic, many places’ cleaning methods weren’t very efficient. Soon, we will have robots that clean places perfectly, disinfecting places humans have a hard time cleaning.

This robot could also save many lives. A lot of people are dying from refusing to go to hospitals when they have an injury or sick, out of fear that they might catch COVID-19. Disinfecting robots could be deployed at hospitals, making people feel safer, so they will go to a hospital when they have a problem.

Everyday Use

In the story Everyday Use by Alice walker, the main character is a mother to two girls. The girls’ names are Maggie and Dee. Their old house was burned down, which left Maggie more timid than before. Dee has already moved out, and Maggie and the main character are on her way to visit her. She has changed her name and changed a lot since she first left.

The author thinks that objects from the past should be used, and not put on display. During their visit to Dee, who changed her name to Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. She wants old quilts so she can hang them up and preserve them, but her mother disagrees and says that they should be used. If they aren’t used, then they are useless.

Dee, or Wangero, thinks that she knows how heritage works and should be treated. But her mother and her sister have different opinions on how old objects should be treated. I don’t know much about this topic because I don’t own many old things. But the author of this story has an opinion, and that is that if you can use something, then use it.
