Uncle Willy by William Faulkner

First of all, I think that this story is unusual and weird because after I read it, I didn’t even get what the plot of the story is.

Second, I don’t like this story and I think that all the events are weird. This story is very confusing and when I read it, I almost fell asleep. It’s so boring.

If you don’t know what this story is about, it’s basically about this guy named Willy, but some call him Uncle Willy. There are some townsfolk who try to get rid of his addiction to drugs.

I was pretty confused at the end where I think he tried to fly a plane, and I think he died.

Overall, I didn’t enjoy this story and I don’t want to read this kind of writing in the future.

“A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury

“A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury is a story where the main Character, Eckels, goes on a time safari that uses a time machine to transfer the hunters, Eckels, Billings, and Kramer and their leaders, Mr. Travis and Lesperance.

These hunters arrive sixty-million years ago to the time of the dinosaurs. In search of a Tyrannosaurus rex with a red paint mark. They are warned by Travis to stay on the metal path that is laid by the time safari because if they accidently step on a plant, animal etc. they would change the future.

They are also told that they cannot shoot at random animals. They only shoot at ones marked with red paint. Why do they have to shoot at marked animals? Lesperance answered this question by telling them that paint marked animals are doomed to die.

After they set foot on the path, they spotted the T-rex a while later and then they started shooting it. (Eckels didn’t listen to instructions and went off the path) After that, the dinosaur fell down and a tree fell on top of it, and Lesperance said that the tree was supposed to kill the T-rex.

They cleaned up the mess and in the morning just as they were about to leave, Travis was mad at Eckels and ordered him to get the bullets out of the large monster. If he didn’t they would leave him here.

After he got them, they were speeding back to present-day and Mr.Travis glared at him a full ten minutes. However, when they got back the place was different. Instead of Keith getting chosen for president, the other one got chosen and all the spelling on the sign was wrong. Just as Eckels was cleaning his boots, He saw a dead butterfly in the muck stuck on his shoe.

He wanted to make it alive again but it was too late. Travis lifted his rifle and shot Eckels.

Mozart vs Beethoven

When I compare Mozart to Beethoven, I think that Mozart is more on the bright side and Beethoven’s on the dark side.

What I mean by that is like, Mozart’s more positive and Beethoven’s more sad. You can tell by their songs. In my experience, Mozart writes more major key music than Beethoven.

A piano player myself, I like playing Beethoven’s music better because in my opinion, sad music is better.

If I have to be friends with Mozart, I think it would be annoying because he’s a more proud person, and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t know what the word “humble” means.

If I have to be friends with Beethoven, I’m probably gonna experience a lot of temper tantrums and complaining. (When I say friends, I mean close friends.)

Overall, I just think that Beethoven’s better than Mozart. duhhhh….

Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, in the year, 1770. He was born in a musical family because his father and grandfather were singers.

He learned piano at the age of four and later became an “assistant organist”. He also played the viola for Prince Elector’s orchestra. When he was 22 years old, he moved to Vienna to study with another composer, Josef Hayden.

Becuase of his playing talents, Beethoven was surrounded by curious people and impressed aristocrats supported him.

In his late twenties, he started to lose his hearing. He wanted to kill himself but he didn’t. Beethoven never managed to find a wife, but he was a sturdy man with a bad temper so he often stomps around Vienna deep in thought like an expert.

Beethoven died in March 1827 from an infected wound on his stomach, and twenty-thousand people attended his funeral.

What I think about “A Rose for Miss Emily”

First of all, I think this story title is very weird because it talks about Miss Emily’s life. It doesn’t talk about roses or include like romantic stuff. Because roses make you think of lovers. Right?

Second, I think that Emily’s weird. She’s weird because she sleeps with a dead body. It’s disgusting.

But, this story has detail. For example, “It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and
spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies”

It uses some cool describing words like lightsome, squarish, and scrolled.(Even if I don’t know what “Scrolled balconies” are.)

“Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber

There’s this man named Walter Mitty who daydreams all the time instead of facing real life.

Usually, his dreams would be about him, being a hero. First, he dreamed that he was the commander of a plane. Then, he dreamed that he was a person who was about to fix a machine that no one knows how to fix in the hospital. when he was going to get a check-up for himself.

He heard that a newspaper boy was selling papers about the Waterbury trial, he dreamed that he was in a trial and that when a gun was shoved at him, he said the gun was his.

When they said that his right hand was in a sling on the day the guy was killed, he simply said that he could have killed the guy three hundred feet away with his left hand.

After that, he went shopping for puppy buscuits. Then he sat in the lobby of a hotel and grabbed a book.

the book was about how Germany might conquer the world in the air. Slowly, he drifted into another dream.

He was the captain of a plane. (Again) and he was about to fly alone in a plane when.. he got interupted again.

His wife was standing there and they went to the drugstore. Where Walter had a daydream again…

“Everyday use” by Alice Walker

“Everyday use” is a story narrated by the mother who talks about her daughter Dicie (Dee/Wangero).

Basically what happens is the mother first talks about how she dreams to be on a program where they unite parents with their kids. Afterward, Dee arrives with her boyfriend and tells her mother that she is no longer named Dee and that she has changed her name to Wangero.

Then she takes out a camera and takes a photo of her own house as if she was on vacation and then they sat down to eat. after the meal, she asked her mom for several other things.

First, she asked for a churn. The mother gave it to her and then she asked for two old quilts and the mother resisted. She pleaded again and again and finally, the mom pulled Maggie into the room, snatched the quilts from Wangero/Dee’s hands and put them in Maggie’s lap.

Wangero didn’t get the quilts, but she didn’t get mad. Just a bit dissapointed. Then she left with her boyfriend.

“Landlady” by Roald Dahl

I think that this is a very unusual story because it has a weird ending and what happens is weird too.

It says that when he put his name and address he noticed that the last two entries were from two to three years ago. Then he remembered them as the missing people in the newspaper headlines.

For some reason almost everything was dead. The Dachshund was dead (preserved and stuffed) and so was the parrot.

And when he sipped his tea, it tasted like bitter almonds. Which is sometimes highly poisonous.

I’m pretty sure that in the end Billy probably dies from the bitter almonds and if he did, the little old lady probably preserved him too. Like how she stuffed the other two. (I think)

“Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan

I personally love this short story and it has been one of my favourites in this past week’s reading.

It talks about how Waverly, the main character in this story plays chess games and also plays against her mother in a game that lasts a liftime.

I like this short story for many reasons, the first one is like how this story doesn’t involve killing, unlike a lot of other stories Dr. Chen makes us read.

Second of all, I could really relate to Waverly and how her relationship with her mother is sometimes very intense and how one wrong movement can ruin the entire thing.

Lastly, this book talks about chess and I love chess. Even though I only play it at home, I’m never really tired of it, and I think that it would be one of my most favourite games.

What I got from the Marco Polo video

Marco Polo was a merchant who traveled to mainly China and Mongolia. He got a lot of respect from the ruler of Mongolia, Kublai Khan, and recorded his travels in prison with Rustichello da Pisa.

He was born in a wealthy Venetian family in the year 1254, his father, Nicolo, was a merchant and his mother Nicole was a regular person.

What I was really curious about was when the guy was talking about Marco’s death and how a priest was standing over him in is deathbed and telling him to confess that his book of travels was mostly fiction.

But, he didn’t and said that he had only told a fration of his stories and which I think means that he only told a bit of it and there would be even more exciting and risky stories waiting to te revealed.

Overall I really enjoyed this video because it gave a lot of facts and details about Marco Polo’s birth, death, and his life.
