William Faulkner’s short story Uncle Willy is about a man named Uncle Willy. He is hated around his town and does illegal stuff. Everyone hates him except for a baseball team. He gives them ice cream and is really nice to them. The narrator of the story is one of the baseball players. He look up to Uncle Willy and so does every other player.

The other people in the town did not like his behavior so they took him to this place to make him change his personality. But this did not work. He ran away by plane but did not really know how to fly it so he ended up crashing and dying.

The main theme of this short story is to not judge a book by its cover. The baseball player see Uncle Willy as a super nice guy because he gave them ice cream and stuff. But they were not seeing the the real him. The real Uncle was a really rude and illegal man and that is why the adults tried to change him.

The short story Ms. Awful is about a super loose teacher. Her class messes around a lot but she doesn’t correct them. One day they have a substitute. Their substitute is super strict and basically the opposite of the old teacher. The kids find out that it was actually their old teacher dressed up and everyone gets very angry but later forgive her.

I think the theme of this short story is to not take things for granted. The kids had a nice teacher but they abused this privilege and messed around. The reason she became more strict is because the children need to become more thankful.

A sound of thunder, by Ray Bradbury, is about two men going into the past to kill some dinosaurs. When they go back they have to follow this floating path. If they step of it, it can cause a change in the future. So when they go back in time, and one of them sees the dinosaur. He freaks out and runs back to the teleport spot. He accidentally steps of the path. He does not know it yet but that action has changed the future drastically.

After he came back to the present, he found that he stepped on a butterfly. In the present a election was finished but they find out that the winner was changed. That ruler was a dictator and was described as a anti-everything person. And the spelling was changed on a sign and things were all weird. After finding this out the other man shot him in the head.

I think the main theme of this story is that all your actions have impacts on the world either long term or short. Even though the butterfly was so small, it had such a big impact on the world by killing it. An example of this in the real world is that you can slack off and not study but that just might make you not smart enough to get the the job you want.

What I took away from this is that you shouldn’t slack off and that even the smallest details of what you’re doing can still make make a impact short or long term.

The short story, “The Lady or the tiger,” is about a man that is in love with the princess, but she has a very protective father. Her father thinks he is not good enough for his daughter because he is in a lower class. Because of this he puts him in a trial. In the trial there are two doors, one leads to a bloodthirsty tiger and the other to the prettiest lady in the kingdom and has to marry her. He has to pick randomly. By doing this the King’s daughter does not get married with him.

The main theme of this story is choices and consequences. In the story the princess shows this theme when she has to decide the fate of the man. She has to decide if he dies or lives on. Both of them have consequences. The the tiger door’s downfall is that she will never see him again but the other door’s is that he will be with someone else and she might be jealous. This shows the theme choices and consequences.

The short story, “The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty,” is about a man named Walter Mitty. He has a pretty ordinary life, but wises he doesn’t. His wife makes him do things and things get really boring. Since he wants a better and different life, he daydreams a lot.

In the story he has a couple daydreams. The first one was about him as a captain on a boat. Another one was about him being a doctor and is doing surgery on a person. The last two were him in court, accused of murder and the other as a pilot of a bombing plane.

I think the theme of this short story is if you want a better life you have to make it for your self. In the story all the daydreams he was in, he had a very high role. This make me think that he wants a life like that. But his role In the real world are pretty low and ordinary. If he tried he could take one of the roles he dreamed of.

The short story, “Rose for Emily,” by William Faulkner is about a lady named Emily. She was a very lonely and sad person. The narrator described her as a fallen monument. Colonel Sartoris(old mayor) said that she didn’t need to pay taxes, but some years later when a new mayor took over, he gave he a tax bill.

She did not respond, so the mayor sent some people to her house. The smell around her house was very stinky, so they used lemons to make it smell better. Homer Barron, a yankee, arrives in summer. He and Emily took rides together.

A little more than a year later, Homer Barron went to Emily’s house and was never seen again. Some people saw Emily buying a poison and thought she was going to kill herself. But she actually killed Homer Barron with it. She did this because she loved him, but he did not want to marry her. So she poisoned him and locked him in her room so he will always be with her.

I think the theme of the story is the difference between past and present. The first time the author shows this theme through is how Emily’s Old South house has turned into one of the last.

The short story, “Everyday use,” by Alice Walker is about a mother that has two daughters. The younger of the to is named Maggie and the other is Dee. Dee is a very arrogant person. She thinks she is very smart and is the best in the family and dresses all expensive. Maggie on the other hand is basically the exact opposite.

The story starts of with Mamma (the mom) dreaming that she was on tv with Dee and Dee was thanking her for everything she has done, but this is only a dream. In reality Dee is ungrateful for her mom and puts her down. Even so Mamma still has a way different perspective of Maggie and Dee.

But later Mamma starts to notice her other child Maggie. She has brought home someone who wants to marry her and the heritage of the family will probably be passed down by Maggie and finally Mamma sees Dee as the selfish people she is.

I think the theme of the story is that personality is the most important attribute of a person. You can see how Dee is very smart and pretty but doesn’t have a good personality. And that is why Mamma has chosen Maggie over Dee. This points out that having a good personality is the best attribute you can have.

“The Modest Proposal,” by Dr. Jonathan Swift, is about the a hunger problem and a poverty problem in Ireland and how the poor people’s babies do not have a good family. They have to beg for money and steal to live. The letter also gives a solution to this problem. Although the solution is very inhuman and careless for the poor.

The solution says that they should kill the poor people and make them into food for the rich and treat the poor people as livestock or animals. He also states ways to eat them, like by boiling them, roasting them, etc.. He even had recipes on them.

He also said to make clothe out of their skin. This solution is actually a logical solution IF you were not human, but since we are this solution is out of the question. In the letter it also states the benefits for the solution. It can solve the problem, help the economy, provide clothe and provide food. As I stated before this solution is good if you do not care about human lives.

The short story, “Seventh Grade,” by Gary Soto is about a young boy named Victor who is going into seventh grade. He has a crush on this girl named Teresa. After finding out he is in the same class as her, he tries really hard to impress her and wants her to think he knows French.

In the beginning he just pretends that he knows French but doesn’t actually know how to speak it, but when Teresa asks him for help, he goes to the library to go check out three French books to learn. I think the theme of this story is to never give up. Even though it was very embarrassing for Victor, he pushed through. He is able to do anything to make Teresa like him.

You can see that there were many times that when Victor could have given up, but decided to not. For example, Victor could have give up when he was embarrassed and he could have not loan the books from the library and not help Teresa with her French. These are the reasons why I believe that the theme of the story is to not give up.

The short story, “Landlady,” is about a young adult who is looking of a place to stay during his journey. He was going to this hotel when this sign caught his eye. This little house allowed people to stay for very cheap. So he decided to spend his night in there.

The person running the house is a very kind, old lady in her 50-60. He puts his name into this chart and sees that two other people have been here. But then he noticed that they have not left yet. The lady says that they are in a different floor. They drink some tea by the fireplace, but something didn’t smell right about in it.

I think the theme of this story is to not make assumptions about strangers. I believe this because in the beginning the landlady seems very nice, but later you can see that she is a bit creepy. One example of this is when she said that the other people were on a different floor, but the lady claimed that she has been very lonely this whole time. Another example is that she stuffed her pets to make them seem alive. And the last reason I believe she is creepy is that I think she killed the other two people by poisoning them. I think that she poisoned the tea. And that is why it smelled weird.
