Tobe in A Rose For Emily by William Faulkner

In A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, Miss Emily was a lady that lived in the town of Jefferson. She was a stubborn and reclusive lady that lived beyond the control of law in the town, despite plenty of complaints about her by the townspeople. During her isolation, the only person who had contact with her was Tobe.

Tobe was Emily’s cook and gardener. He was the one who left the house to purchase things needed. He was also very loyal to Emily, as he remained at her side throughout the thirty plus years that he was in her service. He also didn’t disclose any information about Emily to the townspeople during her isolation, despite their many attempts to make him.

Even though Tobe was very loyal to Emily, there is also evidence to suggest that he dislikes her. After she died, he let the townspeople into her house, then left and was never seen again, instead of staying to mourn her and to attend her funeral.

A Rose for Emily

A theme in the short story A Rose for Emily is the dangers of biases. The town all pitied Emily and thought of her as a bit larger than life, so they ignored many of the suspicious and illegal things she was doing. They’re biases didn’t allow them to suspect Emily.

The story, chronologically, starts with Emily Grierson’s controlling father’s death, with Emily refusing to acknowledged his death for three days, keeping the body. The townspeople dismiss this as her way of grieving. After that, she meets Homer Barron and falls in love with him, but he wasn’t marrying. She then proceeds to buy arsenic without a proper reason, followed shortly by Homer’s disappearance into her house forever. The town again dismissed it, believing that Homer went away somewhere. After she died, Homer’s rotting corpse was found in Emily’s house, showing signs of her sleeping with it.

In the story, the town kept excusing all the signs of Emily’s insanity, because of their pity towards her. She and everyone else thought that she deserved to get what she wanted because of what she went through. When she went to buy arsenic to poison Homer, the druggist gave her a reason, labeling it “for rats,” and not suspecting a thing when Homer mysteriously disappeared soon after. From all the pity the town gave Emily, they raised her onto a pedestal, making her untouchable. They thought insisting that her father was alive was just how she coped, they thought she was going to kill herself with the arsenic, and they thought Homer just left when he disappeared. They firmly believed that she could do no wrong, so they either ignored or made up a reason for everything she did

A Rose for Emily

The main character of this story is a woman named Emily Grlerson. The story takes place a little after the civil war, and the town she lives in is in the South. She wasn’t very social with the other townspeople, so nobody knew her well. The story is about how Emily died, and some other stories about her.

The town that Emily lives in is corrupt. The mayor and authorities let Emily not pay taxes, because she is nobility. She ignores their letters, and when they visit her home, she tells them to go away and refuses to pay taxes. They don’t want to displease her, so they just leave her alone. This shows that even if a rich person breaks the law, they don’t do anything about it.

Later in the story, Emily’s house starts to leak a bad smell. The mayor wants to deal with it, but doesn’t want to confront Emily. They don’t confront her because she is a lady and they think telling her that her house smells would be rude. Even though they receive a complaint from one of her neighbours, they don’t talk to her about it. So they sneak around the house and try to fix it. This shows that they go to great lengths to not bother someone who they think is superior to them.

Near the end of the story, Emily goes to a druggist to buy some poison. She wants to kill the man she’s courting because he recently came out as gay. The druggist asks why she wants to buy the poison, and she just stares at him. He gets intimidated by her and makes up an excuse to himself of why she’s buying arsenic. He gets scared by her and feels overpowered. So he hands over the poison without asking any questions.

The Importance of Team Collaboration

Getting along with your team members is very important but it is extremely easy to start arguing, too. A common thing that happens is getting defensive. However, what does getting defensive mean and how do you prevent it?

When you become defensive, you are trying to hide from the fears of the situation. However, when you do this, it is harder to make the right decision. To stop this, you need to acknowledge, slow down, check negative talk, take action step, and start over.

For example, you are doing a project with fellow employees but then you start to disagree on something. While trying to prove your point, acknowledging that you’re getting defensive is very important. The second thing you can do to not be defensive is to slow down. Many times, you are thinking a lot and you just need to take a breather. Step outside, take a deep breath. Third, check negative talk. Make sure that you’re not just talking about bad things. Try making it more positive. Fourth, which is one of the more important ones, take an action step. You need to figure out something to stop yourself from being defensive; prevent yourself from talking too much, apologize, and many other things could work as well. Lastly, you should go over the situation again but in the right way.

In my opinion, training yourself to not get defensive is crucial when you are working in an environment where you interact with other people often. Taking time to learn this skill is beneficial. Either you’re in high school, college, or in your professional career, working with other people is a common thing and if you tend to get angry or defensive, this can be negative to your relations with people, your career, and many other things.

Why People Should be in the Green Zone Rather then the Red Zone

Sometimes when people comment on a certain thing that one does, that person might easily get angry at a bad comment. When people are easy to get angry, or hard to work with, they are in the red zone (other times, people are in the green zone [easy to work with]). Scientists and experts that study red zone and green zone say that it is important to stay in the green zone and don’t be as defensive.

What is wrong with being in the red zone? Well, when people are in the red zone, they often don’t control their movements. They might do things too extreme, this includes movements and what they say. This might cause others to be hurt, and the person might also be sorry for what he/she did. Also being in the red zone would slow down what they are doing. It is also hard to work or collaborate with people in the red zone. Being in the red zone could also have side affects on what the person in the red zone is doing.

Its important to be in the green zone because it protects both you and others. Being in the green zone might mean more easy to work with. More easy to work and collaborate with could help that person get things done more faster. Being in the green zone, people would not get angry that easily and would often stay calm. Also people are clear about what they do, this is very important in many ways. Being in the green zone is very important to people no matter what they are doing.

Being in the green is especially important, and not going to the red zone. Being in the red zone could slow down someone’s process down. And in the green zone process would speed up. So its important when people find out they are in the red zone to calm down. Also it is important to know when you are in the red zone or not. Like feeling angry all the time might mean you are in the red zone.

A Rose for Emily

A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner is about an old woman who is stuck in in the pre civil war era since she was a noble before the war. Her father was very strict but when he died she went into denial showing that she was pretty emotionally attached to him. The next thing that happens in the story is when a young northerner that Emily tries to court. Emily fails to court him since it turns out that he likes guys. She then goes to the druggist to purchase a lot of arsenic, and we later realize that she murders Homer.

The town itself has a lot of problems since they hold Miss Emily in such high regard as a noble person she is able to avoid paying taxes, and is able to basically force the drug person to sell him arsenic. Along with this they allow her to do anything she wants along as it isn’t too bad. Miss Emily is able to intimidate anyone she wants to get anything she wants and she gets away with murder and no one expects it to be her that murdered him.

In conclusion the town is too pre civil war era. The town is too intimidated by Emily and allows her to intimidate everyone and into giving in to her commands such as tax evasion. Along with this she feels that she is superior to everyone else since she was a noble lady in the pre civil war era.

When collaborating, don’t be so defensive

Collaborating can take place in group projects where you cooperate with different students and present your project. During the making of this process, you will need to communicate with each other. Communicating can be shown by personality. When shown by personality there are two. The first one is the one willing to contribute to the project without any problems with the team members. The other one, is being rude to the members and not cooperating.

Farmers conducted and experiment on putting different chickens together and seeing how they will react. Once this experiment was done, they noticed that there were two different teams, the red team and the green team. The green team is the team of chickens that don’t attack each other and seem to be cooperating in making eggs for the farmers. The second team, the red team, is the group of chickens that don’t seem to be cooperating with each other and peck the other members. They peck off their feathers and turn out to be a bald chicken in the result.

This experiment can tall us not to be so defensive because being defensive would only make it worse and you won’t get anything done. If we work together as a team, benefits will come with a better presentation, better things to say, and better things to entertain the people you are presenting to. In this essay, you are being taught to cooperate with your team members properly without getting sidetracked and argue about unnecessary things.

A Rose for Emily

Emily is the main character of A Rose for Emily. She lives a tragic life and there is a lot of gossip surrounding her. The story happens during her funeral, but has many flashbacks.

Emily’s father died when she was very young and she barely left her house after that. One day, she goes to a drug store to buy arsenic, which is a type of poison. The women in her neighborhood think that she is going to commit suicide. She starts coming out of the house more and is seen around a man named Homer Barron. The women then think that they are going to get married. They heard that she went to a jeweler and ordered a silver toilet set with the initials H.B. on them. She also bought a whole set of mens clothing and the women are certain that they were married. Homer went with Emily into her house and was never seen again. At her funeral, the women burst into a room that Emily never let anyone see. On the bed was homer’s corpse, and next to it was a strand of Emily’s hair.

No one knew what Emily used the arsenic for. I think that she used it to kill Homer. I think that she pretended to marry him so that she would be more respected. I still feel like it is horrible to murder someone though.

What being defensive takes from you

In the Warring States period of ancient China, there were 2 philosophers. Their names were Zhuangzi and Huizi. One day, they were out for a walk, and they reached a bridge. Beneath the bridge was a pond, and beneath the pond there were many fish swimming. Zhuangzi exclaimed, “Look how happy the fish are, swimming around. This must be what it is like to be free.” Huizi retorted, “You’re not a fish, how should you know that they are happy?” Zhuangzi said, “And you’re not me, how do you know that I don’t know the fish happy?” Huizi debated, “If you put it that way, it is clear that I’m not you, so I don’t know what you know. But in the same aspect, you are not the fish, so you don’t know they are happy.” Zhuangzi said, “When you said that, you were already assuming that the fish are happy.”

This is one example of what being defensive and oversensitive can cause. However, there are many other results that are possible. Being defensive causes disorder and conflicts.

There once was a person who had a job at a company, just like other people who had jobs at companies. The person’s job was an admin. One day, the company got merged with a different company, and their admin was older and wiser. So naturally other people would choose the other admin as the merged company’s new admin. The person was forced to work under the new admin. For some reason the new admin didn’t like him. Then, the company’s front desk manager left the company, and since the spot was opened and the new admin didn’t like the person, the person got demoted to work at the front desk. Obviously, this was biased and unfair, but the person was forced. However, the person was reluctant to take that place because that person didn’t want to get demoted. In the end, that person got fired.

Do you think that was a bit harsh?

There was a time where I had to cooperate with a group of 3 other students for a project in class. At one point, one student started to complain about another student’s idea, and they disagreed with each other’s plans. Soon, the two were throwing angry words at each other. The debate got so loud it disrupted the other students from other groups, and other students started to complain about how noisy our group was, about how they couldn’t concentrate. The teacher was forced to stop the production of our project.

In the first story, Zhuangzi was just stating a thought and imagining what it was like to be a fish in water, Huizi just had to dispute, and in the end, he tripped on his own words. In the second story, the person overreacted to his boss’ decision, and although it was unjust, the person had tried to quarrel and refused to accept his fate. This led to his layoff, which proves that defensiveness can cause your own downfall. In the third story, the two students arguing had led to the project’s end, and no one got to work anymore. Even myself, who was not even part of the altercation, was affected. And other students in other groups were delayed or slowed down due to 2 students’ defensiveness to each other.

These three stories share a common moral: Try to be less defensive, and cooperating will go more smoothly and swiftly. When a conflict has happened, don’t keep on arguing. Instead, find a way to resolve the conflict. And in the end, make up to one another. If one follows these methods, they shall become a good leader and cooperator.

People’s View on Emily

Emily is a Negro woman who people like to gossip about. She does many things that are out of usual like not paying taxes, furiously denying that her father is dead even though he clearly is, and more.

When the officials tell Emily to pay the taxes, she ignores all the letters that were sent to her. When she finally replied, she said that she doesn’t have to pay the taxes because one of her ancestors contributed and that makes her an exception.

Then, when her father died, for days she would insist that he was still alive. At the end of the story, the curious villagers looked in her room and found out that she had been sleeping with his corpse.

When she was with Homer, people thought that she was too good for him. Emily then poisoned him with rat poison.

The villager’s overall view of her is that she thinks she is better than everyone else and that she is superior to the normal people. When her father dies and she kills Homer, the villagers think, “Finally she can live like a normal person now.”

Emily is anything but a normal person and the story explains her life before her death.
