Miss Awful

Miss Awful by Arthur Cavenaugh is a about a young, playful, carefree boy named Roger and his third grade class. They have a substitute teacher who is insanely strict and makes everyone hate her and be annoyed by her since she gives so much homework. Roger dubs her Miss Awful and all of the students, including the parents don’t like her since she insults the kids so much. On her last day the kids become rebellious and want to take revenge and she loses hope and becomes miserable thinking that she failed to teach even one student, but Roger understanding this spells out a few words to show her that she didn’t waste her time with the class.

The teacher whose actual name is Miss Orville was evicted from her home and all of her plants except for one were taken away. So when her last plant was destroyed by the children she gave up and stopped caring until Roger showed that she hadn’t completely failed. Miss Orville installed a kind of tough love strict kind of style to help her students learn more since the other laidback teacher wasn’t teaching them much.

Roger changed over the course of the story from being a young, carefree playful, boy as well as being a bit dense. Roger at first hates her for being so strict but he is better for it he becomes smarter, more mature, and is better overall from his teacher. Roger in the end figures out that Miss Orville actually is being good for him and that since she is so strict he learns more than he ever has.

In conclusion Roger changes a lot throughout the story and becomes a better person overall. Roger becomes smarter more mature and becomes less playful and carefree. Miss Orville gives up until Roger understands what’s happening and cheers her up.

The Truth About Graphene – What’s the Hold-up?

Graphene is one of the most important materials, a million times thinner then a piece of human hair, and ten times stronger then steel. predictions say that graphene would be used to create space ships like in Star Wars or Star Trek. People have been calling graphene an “massive disappointment” due to not having these spaceships yet. Graphene is an manmade substance with extraordinary promise. The graphene atoms are arranged in an hexagon lattice, only one atom thick. The structure allows each atom to be bonded three more around it, which is why graphene is so strong. Graphene has many uses, such as lighting and computers. It can even be used as a space elevator, although we are not even close to these technology. Graphene products can be significantly better then what’s out there, but it will also be significantly more expensive.

Scientists have begin developing ways to mass-produce graphene. The results we are seeing are very promising. Which is fortunate, because then we wouldn’t need sticky tape to build that space elevator. There is a method which is often called “turning trash into treasure”. This involves taking any material with high carbon levels and heating it to kelvins in ten milliseconds. this causes the carbon bonds to break and reconstruct as graphene. Its producers hope to produce two kilograms of graphene a day. We are finally seeing the release of graphene products that offer benefits over materials created by industry standard materials. Different teaching methods and their impacts

In the short story Ms. Awful, there are two different teachers, Ms. Wilson and Ms. Orville. Ms. Wilson is the students’ original teacher that left for a week. Ms. Orville is the substitute teacher for her. They have different teaching styles, with Ms. Wilson being the fun, relaxing teacher, and Ms. Orville being the very strict teacher. Personally I am also a teacher, and I try to be strict while having fun. So, what is the best method of teaching, and what are their impacts?

First, we have the teaching style of making it fun. Making the class fun has some helpful benefits that could also be a little bad. If the class is fun, the lessons would be more engaging but time-consuming. Making it engaging makes students focus more and guarantees that they will get better scores on tests. But, being time-consuming, kids might miss out on activities like recess. On the bad side, teachers that allow toys like squishes, fidget toys, and slime can make students not pay attention as much. So, I would not go with that for the long term.

Furthermore, being both strict and fun is another nice method not used by a lot of teachers because it is hard to maintain for a long period of time. It would have the same benefits as being engaging to the students, but it would require the teacher to be on the lookout for students that are not paying attention. This is super hard as if you are managing a class of 24 kids you have a pretty hard time multitasking all these things. I personally tried this on a group of 9 between the ages of 8 – 14 years old. It was hard multitasking, and I ended up having to extend the class a little longer. I would try to use it half of the time, but not always.

Lastly, being very strict like Ms. Orville would feel like school is horrible, but if you pay attention, it would be super rewarding. I had a teacher in 4th grade barking out “why the heck did you get a 6/10 on your spelling test” or “you should be in second grade with this work”. Honestly, I took a lot from that class because I was focusing, and was on top of the class. It felt great because the teacher was applauding me while shaming other people so I liked it as a student. I feel that this would make kids very disciplined for the time that they have this teacher, but it will wear off after they get a different teacher. I would not recommend it unless if your class is very behind or is not focusing and use it temporarily.

To sum it up, I like all of these methods but I would prefer to use one or another depending on what situation it is. I would prefer being in the middle so the class will be enjoyable and disciplined.

respect your teachers

Teachers are important figures in society, molding their pupils’ lives for the better or the worse. Teachers like Miss Wilson, though allowing them to have fun, nudge their students down the path of ignorance and delinquency. On the other hand, stricter teachers like Miss Awful often have their students’ best interests in mind and truly wish the best for their pupils. It can seem like going through hell and back to study under a strict teacher, but they should still be respected.

Miss Wilson has the love of her entire class, but she’d be better off as a babysitter than a teacher. Under her tutelage, her students have learned to fool around all day, neglecting all their work from spelling to chores. Despite already being in third grade, Roger still spells “floor” as “f-l-o-r” and “castle” as “k-a-z-l.” He “wishes to remain a child at play.” As Elizabeth says, school isn’t supposed to be a “fun fest,” but it is a place to learn.

Under Miss Orville, termed by her students as Miss Awful, the previously rowdy group form perfectly straight lines, marching with “military precision.” But, the third grade class doesn’t appreciate her at all. They aren’t at all used to their substitute teacher’s strict teaching, and they curse at the loathsome figure behind her back. As a goodbye gift, the students even rip off all the “dopey leaves” of the “dopey old plant” Miss Orville dotes on.

No matter how much her students detest her, Miss Orville still works hard to improve them, in her own way. Perhaps she doesn’t know any other way to keep charge of such a boisterous class. But she wants her students to be civilized, and only “to be educated is to be civilized.” Miss Orville truly wants her pupils to mature, and hopes that she helps at least one of them to grow even just a “fraction of an inch.” In fact, under Miss Orville’s tutelage, Roger has grown more than a fraction of an inch. Rather than watching television or playing with toys, he’d rather hole himself in his room to do over his homework “for the ninety-eighth time.” But more than merely improving on spelling, Roger has learned how to be more compassionate. He objects to hurting Miss Orville when the rest of his class were racking their brains to think of ways to “get even” with her. And he’s the only one who stays behind after the school bell rings, hoping to show Miss Orville that she had helped him and made a difference.

All teachers teach in different ways. Miss Wilson isn’t a terrible teacher, perhaps some might learn better under her than Miss Orville. Nevertheless, no matter how much a teacher is abhorred, they should still be held in esteem, as it is hard work to educate others. Unlike the students who “ran out” at the close of class, Roger shows Miss Orville he cares by staying behind.

“Privileged”

Have you ever wasted your privileges? Or felt you were privileged but wasted them. Well in today’s short story: Mrs. Awful, we see how a kid named Roger, think school is just a place to play and relax. Too often in our modern and fast-growing society, we are just like Roger and misuse our privileges. But instead, we should use them wisely and treasure them.

Roger is a carefree boy who thinks school is a place to play and relax. He brings toys to school and thinks a school is a place where he plays with his friends. But when his playful teacher who he thinks is a good teacher because she is very carefree, like him, and is not strict. But when there is a substitute teacher, Roger calls her a witch, and quote on quote, awful. She is strict and helps Roger realize how privileged he is. For example, he is going to school and thousands of other children in the world cannot. After that, Roger is more serious about school and his academics improve.

After looking at a negative example, let us look at Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt was born in a rich family. He had many privileges, such as being able to wear the best clothes and go to te best schools. He could have easily said I want to be lazy and misuse my privileges. But he did the exact opposite. He worked hard, studied all the time, and became one of the best presidents of the US, helping make one of the greatest achievements of all time: The Panama Canal. If he had not, he would not have beed the great president he was.

We looked in the example of Roger, and how he wasted his privileges. But then changed, and his academics improved. In the example of Roosevelt, he used his resources and made the best of them, which helped him become one of the best US presidents. Though we may not be able to become the president of the US if we do not waste our privileges, we will see an improvement of ourself.

Is Miss Awful actually awful?

Is that roller coaster scary? No way! Is this pizza topping good? Yes, it’s the best! If you’ve really liked or disliked something, based on your previous experience, that is called personal judgment, and personal judgment happens in ‘Miss Awful’.

In today’s short story, ‘Miss Awful’, the main character, Roger Clark, has a very nice teacher called Mrs. Wilson, who does whatever the kids in her kids want to do. Then, one day, a substitute teacher comes, called Ms. Orville, who is more stricter than Mrs. Wilson, and the kids in the class all think she is a witch. However, in the end, Roger figures out she is just doing her job, and it is Mrs. Wilson that is the worse teacher.

I belive that Ms. Orville, wrongly named ‘Ms. Awful’, is actually the better teacher. This is because Mrs. Wilson is not preparing the kids for their adulthood, and instead making them feel like they are the ones that always make the decisions. On the other hand, Miss Orville has stricter rules, but is very helpful to the students because they are forcing themselves to do their work well, since they fear in retaliation Ms. Orville will do something bad to them. Before, the class was a mess, the desks were everywhere, the students’ clothes were rumpled, and the class wasn’t good at all. In a few days, Miss Orville changed all that. They were at military standard, marching in straight lines, their clothes were neatly tucked, and the classroom looked way better than before. If Mrs. Wilson had continued to teach them, they would have never gotten the effect of school that other kids with better teachers were getting.

To recapitulate, I think that Miss Awful should be renamed Miss Amazing, since she is the actual one who is helping the kids. I had a stricter teacher in the third grade, and, that year my academics got really good. I figured out that if you behave well, strict teachers can still have fun with students at a better level.

Miss Awful

Miss Awful is a story about a substitute teacher called Mrs. Orville. She is very strict, especially compared to their full-time teacher, who lets them do whatever they want and doesn’t teach. The children call their substitute Miss Awful because of how awful she is.

The moral of the story is that you shouldn’t judge people before you know them. The students only say that Mrs. Orville is awful only because of her appearance. However, in the end, Mrs. Orville states that learning is a priceless thing. We realize that Mrs. Orville was only trying to educate as much as she can during this time.

Why Reading is Important

People pass on stories from a long time ago. Reading is a important part of human’s growth today, kids read books and learn, teens read books and learn, and even adults read books and learn. Why is reading so important? I think reading is so important because reading could help people learn knowledge. People could learn a lot of things in books, no matter how old the person is. Reading books should be passed on so people after us could learn from books.

Reading books is important because people could learn from books. Books include lots of knowledge that our ancestors passed on. From a book, people could learn about the subjects that we learn in school, math, language arts, social studies, science, and many more. We could also learn religious traditions of people around the world. And learn about other places and things we don’t know. But as technology is getting better, and people do everything online, less and lesser people are still reading books. People have other things to do rather then reading books, for example, look at instagram. Though people should keep reading books because books could helps people learn all the things they want.

Reading books should be passed on and people later on should read books. This is because people should be constantly learning, and books could help with that. So many books are written through out the decades before us, they could teach almost anything. People should not stope reading books because things on the internet is more important. Reading books is still a really important thing or tradition.

Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover

Appearances don’t always show what is on the inside. If you get a strict teacher, is she just being mean or is there something more? Graphene is a material that is super thin but is it weak? Don’t assume facts about something just from their look.

“Miss Awful” by Arthur Cavanaugh shows a substitute teacher for a 3rd-grade class. Their original teacher is very flexible and lets the students do whatever they want, but the sub, known as Ms. Orville or Ms. Awful, was very strict to them. The students hated her as they were forced to behave a certain way but we later learn that she just wanted to teach them to be less violent because of something she has been through. Having Ms. Orville not only taught them to behave but also helped them learn more academically.

Graphene is a material that was discovered a few decades ago, and it is a 2D, one-atom thick version of graphite. If it’s so thin, people may assume that it is very fragile but it’s actually many times stronger than steel. People also may assume that this material would be used in everyday materials, but because of difficulties doing things, such as mass-producing, graphene hasn’t been used as much.

Whether it’s an extremely thin material or a teacher who’s very stern, you shouldn’t judge them on what they look like or how they act with limited knowledge. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Miss Awful

Roger, the main character of the story, had the best teacher before, Miss Wilson. She used to play with the students during classes and even let the students take some rest. When she gave homework Roger didn’t even care about it. Once she left for a week to Omaha, the students got a new substitute. She was old, the meanest, and the strictest teacher ever. She came to the classroom with her beloved plant one hand and a bunch of works on the other. She was Ms. Orville which students referred to as Miss Awful or the witch. The first day, Miss Orville took Roger’s toys ripped the papers of students who didn’t do the homework correctly, marched them in and out from the schools, and complained about the students to their parents. Miss “Awful” then accused Roger as a prodigy of misspelling Then she asked Roger to spell flower and castle but he couldn’t. After this embarrassment of Mrs.Clark in between other parents, she and Mr. Clark were surprised to see how Roger took his education seriously and was afraid of her. Another day when parents came to pick up their children Nancy Reeves, Roger’s friend’s Bruce Reeves mother remembered that she knew Miss Orville and said that she was evicted from her apartment and was left homeless with her plants.

Since the students hated her they thought of many horrible ways of getting rid of her like beating her up. One of Roger’s classmates came up with the idea to rip the leaves of her plant. Miss Awful started her last day with what is going on in the world. After she saw the plant all bare, she said to only say sorry and then to be forgiven. After the class ended there were no forming lines and some students were silent, or in regret, while others were happy. She gave Roger his toys, he understood how much it was to be educated, and to show how she helped him he spelled the two words she gave him before beautifully and left the room.
