What I think about “A Rose for Miss Emily”

First of all, I think this story title is very weird because it talks about Miss Emily’s life. It doesn’t talk about roses or include like romantic stuff. Because roses make you think of lovers. Right?

Second, I think that Emily’s weird. She’s weird because she sleeps with a dead body. It’s disgusting.

But, this story has detail. For example, “It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and
spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies”

It uses some cool describing words like lightsome, squarish, and scrolled.(Even if I don’t know what “Scrolled balconies” are.)

How we can protect truth in the age of misinformation by Sinan Aral

In his TedxCERN talk, Sinan Aral talked about how the world could remain safe in the face of misinformation. During his talk, he mentioned the Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential elections. This is one of the many problems that plague the world, the intervention of countries in the domestic affairs of other sovereign states.

The earliest intervention of a country in another country’s domestic affairs is probably the Opium Wars, when the United Kingdom invaded China in response to a Chinese crackdown on opium smuggling. Since then, many countries and their respective intelligence agencies have interfered, militarily or otherwise, in other countries’ domestic affairs. A few examples would be the 1953 Iranian coup d’etat, the Cambodian-Vietnamese War, and the Russo-Georgian War.

Countries, especially the world’s superpowers of the United States, Russia, and China, must stop trying to influence and interfere with the affairs of other sovereign states. Every country has the right to govern and control its territory, and that should not be affected by another country’s desire to control the world.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is about a daydreaming married man who is subservient to his wife. Walter Mitty daydreams about himself in 5 different stories. In each daydream he dreams about a man who is supposed to be himself except for the fact that these people were brave, fearless, and confident.

In the first daydream he thinks that he is a captain of a ship and is leading him away from a dangerous storm. In this story the captain is a cold, distant, courageous person. He doesn’t even refer to this daydream character as himself, he refers to him as the captain. He is awoken from this daydream by his wife who tells him to drive slower and he complies without question. This is the first instance that we are shown that he is very compliant and quite timid.

The second daydream that I will be talking about is his last daydream where he is faced with death by a firing squad. He wants to see his death coming meaning that he doesn’t fear death even at the face of deaths door. In this daydream his character does not fear death and is most likely brave. Before this he is awoken from this by his wife who was looking for him for a while but this time he kind of talks back to her saying  “Does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking?” She looked at him. “I’m going to take your temperature when I get you home,” she said.” Her response is talking about how she thinks that he is sick and that how she doesn’t think he has the audacity to talk back to her.

In conclusion The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a deep story about Walter Mitty’s hopes and dreams that he doesn’t want to actually do. Walter Mitty’s stories reflect on what he actually does in real life to some extent. And finally he resigns to his fate as being subservient to his wife with his daydream about the firing squad.

Who are most mentally affected by Covid-19?

When Jean Twenge preformed a study he found that an average adult was 52% more likely to have mental health problems than in 2018. Out of these people ages 18-44 were affected the most, according to Twenge. This is likely because older people have financial support and retirement funds, meaning they are still getting money while all the businesses are shut down. Younger people however don’t. Many lost their jobs causing depression, and loss of hope. Another factor is that many younger people already had depression or other mental illnesses as depression surged from 2012 to 2017. Another group of people are parents, as many daycares and schools shut down. This causes parents to have to care for their kids at home, which can interrupt work and will likely cause stress. There are some potential solutions, though most are enviable. One could try to reopen the economy, but this will likely be worse than just keeping it shut down. This is because with the economy reopened, the virus will spread, and this will cause more stress and pain. (I couldn’t write a conclusion because this is a general summary of my ideas because the old one got deleted.)

Walter Mitty’s Imagination 🤑

Walter Mitty, while chauffeuring his wife to her weekly hair appointments, falls into a number of fantasies, always playing the masculine and heroic main character. In these dreams, Walter is a leader, and is admired by others. However, in real life, Walter feels ridiculed by passersby and is governed by his dominating wife. Walter’s fantasies are a sort of paradise he escapes to after experiencing frustrations, and they are largely a result of not being in control of his own life.

Walter’s wife’s continuous nagging and henpecking leads Walter to retreat into his own imagination, where he can play the hero, protecting damsels-in-distress. In fact, Walter imagines himself defending a “lovely, dark haired girl” while a criminal on trial. While Walter’s wife is labelled as unfeminine and a little insensitive, the women who appear in Walter’s fantasies are lovely. They serve as props, allowing Walter to demonstrate his heroics, which he is incapable of in real life.

Walter fantasizes himself to be brave and totally in control. He doesn’t have to listen to his wife, forced to wear his gloves and overshoes. One of his alter egos, Captain Mitty, is shown to be able hold his liquor, being in total control of himself even when drinking. In the courtroom, Walter forges his own path, refusing to hide behind his sling, even if it can save him from a sentence. He is in total control of himself, choosing to disclose the truth.

Walter is very conscious of how others view him. He believes the grin of garagemen is mocking him, and plans to “wear (his) right arm in a sling” to avoid the ‘judgement’ of the garagemen. In real life, most passersby only interact with him to criticize him or deride him, such as the woman who laughed at him for saying “puppy biscuit.” In contrast, Walter often imagines onlookers to marvel at his skills and courage. For example, while he is the commander of a hydroplane, his crew trusts that “The Old Man’ll get (them) through.” This aspect of Walter’s fantasies shows that Walter yearns to be someone who does not fear judgement from others.

Walter’s real life and his dream life aren’t exactly two separate realities, but his imaginings are actually a part of his real life. It is what gives him the willpower and strength to continue, and the heroic figures he imagines himself to be are the heroes he hopes to become. His fantasies are the small part of his life he can control, where he can mold himself into the man he hopes to be. In his imagination, Walter can be a Prince Charming to helpless ladies, where he is the one in control and fearless to any criticism.

The Age of Anti-False Information

BREAKING NEWS: Britain has just sunk under the waves! BREAKING NEWS: Donald Trump has just declared war on Australia! These titles are all titles of fake news.

In this Ted Talk, Sinai Aral talks about how we can protect truth in the midst of misinformation. Fake news can sway elections and pulverize economies in our everyday life. Aral clarifies how it spreads so quickly and identifies strategies to help untangle the the net between true and false.

I believe Sinai Aral’s ways to separate the truth from fake news are correct. Right now, there are lots of examples of fake news spreading. For example, in the 2016 election, Russian hackers literally changed the results of the polls, just by spreading misinformation. Another example is when Syrian hackers hacked into twitter accounts, posting that at the White House, explosions took place and the president at the current time, Barrack Obama, was injured. That tweet was retweeted thousands of times in minutes. This didn’t only affect people’s feelings, though. It also changed investors minds. They started selling their stocks at an alarming rate. Billions of dollars worth of stock were sold and money lost, just because of fake news. His ideas, were that ‘events’ that caused disgust and surprise were more likely to be fake than to be real, whereas real news had joy, happiness, and so on. Real news were more positive, where fake news have more of a negative or shocking effect. I can certainly agree on this, like when I saw this ad on an article I was reading, it said: ‘The Golden Gate Bridge has fallen down, 50 people missing or dead’. That really has an effect on me, because I don’t expect a bridge that has been fine for decades has just suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, I had some training on fake news so I checked, and fortunately, the people who generated the fake photos didn’t do a very good job, and I saw overlapping images, and parts of the photo where it was blurrier, and so on. I also agree on his idea of regulation. He believes that the computer algorithms should be given to the public, so that they can also check if something’s right or wrong.

In conclusion, Aral’s philosophy is correct, and I firmly agree with him. There is still lots to do to counter misinformation. If we do not take strong action, soon we will not know if Mexico has been destroyed by earthquakes, or if Moscow has turned into a space city. People will keep feeding the public these confusing blogs until we take aggressive action and stop this at once.

Is Daydreaming Good or Bad?

Is daydreaming good or bad? Growing up, you may have been told to “get your head out of the clouds” but is daydreaming actually a negative thing? In “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber, Walter Mitty is doing his everyday tasks, except that we get an insight of his daydreams. Doing this doesn’t affect him majorly while doing something except it makes his day more interesting.

According to Live Science, adults were tested on working memory and the people who said that their mind wandered often, scored higher on the test. “Working memory” is how your brain thinks of multiple things at the same time. People who daydream are “[giving their] working memory a workout”. Studies suggest that people whose minds wander more also had higher creativity.

Similarly, Psychology Today states that when kids daydream, it helps them explore their interests more and find more solutions to problems. People who daydream is also found to be more productive in achieving their goal. “Structured daydreaming” can be a technique to reach your target. By imagining the things that lead up to what you want to achieve, you’ll have an idea of what to do and basically create a plan.

Yes, daydreaming all day may sometimes be distracting, but it’s proven to have good results. It can help us be more successful in life, be more creative, achieve a goal easier, and many other positive achievements.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

In the short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, one theme is the difference between dreams and reality. Walter Mitty, the protagonist, keeps daydreaming of scenarios in which he is in control in some way. Meanwhile, in real life, he is sent on errands and generally bossed around by his wife. The story looks at the contrast between these two worlds.

The story focuses on a series of Walter Mitty’s daydreams. In the first one, he was the captain of a ship, directing his crew to escape a terrible storm. In the second, he was a skilled surgeon, operating on a millionaire banker. Then he was a killer, boldly admitting his crime at court. After that he was a pilot, laughing in the face of death as he prepares to fly a suicide mission. Finally, in the last daydream, he was on death row, about to be shot by a firing squad.

In all of Mitty’s daydreams except the last one, he had control of both his own and the lives of others. The captain was saving his crew, the surgeon was saving his patient, the killer killed someone, and the pilot was heading to his death to save his side of the war. This is a sharp contrast to his real life, in which everything is controlled by his wife. In fact, he spends the entire story obeying her. In all of his fantasies, he was thinking about making his own decisions, but never acting on them. This continues until he finally gives up, ending the story in his final daydream, in which even his imagined self didn’t have any control, just like in real life.

A theme in the story is fantasy and reality, and the differences between the two. Fantasy Mitty is strong willed and powerful, while real Mitty is a pushover. throughout the story, real Mitty keeps trying to be fantasy Mitty, but never acted on it. In the end, he gives up, and fantasy Mitty also loses the imaginary control he had, becoming like real Mitty.

How Coronavirus is Affecting People’s life

2019, Coronavirus struck China, and as months pass, Coronavirus spread to other countries including US. When more and more people are found with Coronavirus, more and more people’s life are affected by it. People are not allowed to gather in a large group, or even gather up with friends. Most shops and restaurants are closed, or not allowed to have to much people at a time. And schools are closed, and people are asked to work at home. All of these things are causing mental health issues to people.

Because worried that more people would get the Coronavirus, people are asked not to gather in large groups, or even gather up with friends. Many people like to have parties whenever something good happens, or even when something bad happens. They use parties as a place to relax, but when people don’t have this place to relax, it might have bad affects on their mental health. Also talking to friends might be one way to express their feelings. Without talking to friends, they might not express their feelings, which would also cause troubles in people’s mental health.

Man often does not understand why woman like to shop so much. This is because while shopping they don’t have to think of anything, and whatever they see that they like, they would just buy it. Shopping helps woman change their feelings that they had. So shopping is one way to change their feelings, but with the coronavirus, people are told not to go to places with so much people. Shops are asked to be closed because they add to the possibility to get the coronavirus. So without the place to change feelings, its hard to have a good day. Having bad feelings the whole time might cause issues in mental health.

Since March, schools are closed, and people are asked to work at home. School and work places have too much people and have a very large possibility that people would get coronavirus as a whole. So all people are asked to stay home and reduce the time they are out. But school and work places are some places where people socialize (free time). Socializing is a really important thing that people should learn and do. Though now, people could only socialize online. Being online is not as good because it is not good for their eyes and some people would rather not talk to others then going online. People would start to hate contacting with others it this goes on.

From all the above, coronavirus is really affecting people on their mental health. People are asked not to gather with friends. Shops and restaurants are closed or making sure not much people are there. Schools are closed, and people are working at home. Not only is it causing mental health issues, its also is causing other big and small problems.
